About to purchase system for a friend today (1/28/08)

About to purchase a gaming rig for my roommate. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything stuipd.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

Hard cap at $900 (and I would like to save him some money)

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
US

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.
None, I like to buy whatever is best bang for the buck. I have bought am all.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
He has a monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, and possibly hard drive.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
Yes, read many threads and articles to come to my current system configuration.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Going for relatively quiet computing at default speeds with still relatively good cooling.

I think I can worry about a hard drive later, as we have quite a few laying around the house. Don't know what else I should be thinking about. I have heard there have been some compatibility issues with some P35 boards and the 8800gt?

Please let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!

Looks good but you may go cheaper on PSU.
I recommend 4 gb ram (2x2gb).

There are no problems that I know of P35 + 8800GT. I use Abit IP35-E and eVGA 8800GT.

Don't really want to invest in a new 64-bit OS for him, even though we get a discount from MS. I have always been a huge fan of going overboard on the PSU, and at that price, I may just give him mine and take the 520 😀

Well, that puts my mind at ease somewhat. I had just read somewhere briefly that the PCIe 2.0 spec I think was causing problems.

Nah it looks near perfect, perhaps throw in 2x2gb instead ? And only buy the 520hx if you're keeping it yourself, otherwise do his wallet a favor and buy a earthwatts 430w or a corsair 450vx.

any recommendations on a pair of 2x2gb that is high quality but won't break the bank? Oh, and something that I was thinking about, was a backplate mounting HSF for his CPU.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820145184 Rated at 1.8v, which is nice I think. This should work too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820220227

And, you can always simply buy a arctic freezer 7 pro, check anandtech's review, it basicaly confirmed what we all knew a long time ago, it's a cheap cooler, that performs really well, especially considering it's price. If you don't like the pushpins, order a 3-4$ backplate mounting kit, you should be able to find a website that sells one on the cases & cooling forum.
