I've heard the term "re-badge" and "hybrid-power"

I can't figure out what those mean or why they are significant to the degree of actual performance. (Edit, I do understand what they mean, I jus tmean that I can't figure out how that degrades performance significantly amongs other 9800gt's)

I'm looking at these models, mainly 9800gt. But if my AMD X2 5000 (OC'd stable to 3.02ghz) If I'm not cpu limited, I would like to get a 4850.

Palit 4850

xfx 9800 gt 512mb gddr3 (pvt98gydlh)

bfg tech (bfge98412gtocpe)

evga 512 Recertified 9800 GTX

(not so worried about re-cert, it either works or it doesn't for 90 days IMO)

Rebadging and Hybrid Power have nothing to do with performance. For pure gaming performance, all 9800 GT cards perform identically to each other, with minor differences due to factory overclocks.

How CPU limited you are depends on the game and resolution/setting.

The card to get in this price range now is this:

9800GTX+ for $139 with free $50 USB tv tuner

You can sell the tuner and have the 9800GTX+ for around $100, making it current bang for buck champ. Or keep the tuner if you need it for the current "good deal" champ at this price range.

That Palit 4850 dumps a whole lot of heat into a box you're trying to run an OCd CPU in. If you can find a 4850 with a better HSF, and a free tuner, flip a coin.

I have both these cards, and know of what I speak. (my 4850 is Visiontek, but it has that same cooler)

BTW hybrid power is only for 780a owners- it's using onboard graphics for 2D to save on heat and power. "Rebadged" doesn't matter to you either, it describes putting a new label on an old chip design and calling it a new chip. 9800GTXs are different from 8800 series cards in a few ways, not sure about 9800GTs as I've never had one or investigated them.

I bought the xfx 9800gt 512MB because of the price to performance ratio. Also it is single slot, doesn't take up a bunch of space, and requires only 1 pci express cable which is all I have atm. The Asus 9800gt ultimate is a high performer so I here, it's pretty much a rebadged 8800gts but people have said they can get it to 9800gtx speeds with an easy overclock. I would have gotten it if I had the space for the dual slot cooler.
