I need the smallest and lightest laptop with a built-in DVD player. I'm a big fan of the IBM/Lenovo keyboards, but I'd be willing to try something else so long as it was illuminated for use on darkened planes. Weight is always the most important consideration, but performance is a close second.

Any suggestions?

Update Well, I did it. At the end of the day, the deals were too good to pass up.

x200?

Edit: my bad I don't think it has a built in DVD player/optical drive.

How about the Sony VAIO TZ?

I like the X300, but the X301 excites me a bit more because of the LED backlit display.

Dell Latitude E4200?

Oh and whatever you get, feel free to buy a couple and send one my way. I won't argue, I promise ;)

Dell seems to be dropping new ones almost daily. They released a 13.3" model with built in optical yesterday so that may be worth a look. I am pretty certain it has an option for LED screen as well.

Because there are no deals being offered on the 301, the difference in price between a similarly configured X300 and X301 is in excess of $1000.

For that, you get a 0.2 Ghz faster processor and DDR 3 memory instead of DDR2.

And Lenovo describes the plain old X300 as having an LED backlit screen as well.

Hard to justify the bump in price.

You are right. Thaks for the link. I did not find that. I also like the T400 with the LED option. As was said above, brighter and less power consumed - IOW, more efficient. (Also, longer life.)

I just pulled the trigger with the steep discounts and 10% off coupon.

Walked off with the X300 with 64GB SSD, 2GB RAM, Vista Ultimate, 4 year warranty + 4 year ThinkPad protection for ~$2000. A week an a half ago that would have been around $3300.

I looked at similarly equiped 301's but uh, its like $3000 for for what I described with just the 1 year warranty/no thinkpad protection. Ive been looking at laptops for a few weeks. I orignally looked at the Sony TZ's and Asus U2Es. I am glad I waited a couple weeks. I thought about holding out for the Dell Latitude E 4300s but Lenovo is better than Dell.

Good choice. Enjoy. The deals on the X300 are unbelievable right now.

BTW, for those of you still considering a possible purchase, make sure you pick up a 90 W Slim AC/DC Combo Adapter at the same time. It's on special for $95.96 with a Notebook purchase and it's smaller, lighter and a faster charger than the standard charger that comes with the X300. Perfect for road warriors like me who count every centimeter and gram. Add an optional cellphone and/or iPod tip for $9.95 each and lose up to two other chargers from your notebook bag.

Best thing is, with two chargers you always keep one in your bag, so you never make that unhappy discovery right after your plane takes off that you've left your charger behind.

Well, my X300 made its trek across the pacific Saturday. Made it to Dallas this afternoon and is on its way to my city now. I'll have it tomorrow sometime. Not sure what time though.

Worldwide Express is supposed to deliver by 12pm.
