About to order a IBM...

Well Im about to order a IBM...have a budget of around $1650, so deciding between the T42 or the R51.
First, if both notebooks have essentially the same equiptment...what is the advantage between either-or? Is there a higher level of build quality between these two models?

And most importantly...both of these models are right at my limit of spending, and If I am going to get a IBM, I am not going to be able to afford a warranty. I am used to having notebooks with constant problems, etc, so normally a warranty is a must. But with IBM...I always hear positive things and how reliable they are. Would I be making a mistake my not opting for a 2-3 year warranty on either one of these notebooks? I hate to spend the money only to have it break and then be in the hole for repairs. But the only reason im considering bypassing the warranty is 1). I can't afforded to get it because of the cost of the notebook and 2.) IBM's reputation seems to be rock solid, and perhaps it is not needed as it would be for a dell, hp, etc.

I am hopefully going to be making the purchase very soon, so I would appreciate any feedback from IBM owners (specifically of one of these models, or just in general), or those who have worked with them and can give me some badly needed feedback. Thanks!

I think the Tx series come standard with at least a 3 year warranty. You should be okay with whichever you get. T series notebooks are much lighter than the R series. You should check http://forum.thinkpads.com for more information there on differences between the two notebooks.

The T4x series are good, however, their build quality is top amongst thin and light notebooks it isn't the best in quality and durablity against other larger thinkpads. Everytime I open up the lid of my t40 I feel like I am going to break the screen. Since it is made out of magnesium it has a flexiblity to it which can be detrimental to the screen.
