I did enjoy Bionic Commando, but it was frustrating as hell. I would rent the game every weekend and could only get about halfway through it. I finally bought it several years later and beat it.

My favorite of that style of characters (same developers I'm assuming) is Super Dodge Ball. There was also this field and track game with the same style of characters...but I dunno its name :(

Is this it? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_%27n_the_Boys:_Street_Challenge

This is the company:

Heck yeah. I only ever rented it, though, couldn't find it anywhere to buy. Don't think I ever made it past the fourth stage or so.

Great 2 player side scrolling fighting action, the ability to buy powerups, beat up high school thugs, rescue the gurl, and kick the $*** out of the other pc too! Oh yeah, you could go back to earlier areas too (and had to at a couple of points).

Edit: I forgot to add Final Fantasy 1 to your list. It absolutly hooked my on the RPG genre. I even started playing it though again recently. I am trying to kick Warmech @$* with the typical powergroup of 2 masters, white wizard, black wizard at level 24 (he won the first round).

Holy crap, that is fun

There was another really fun NES game. It was a speed boat game with guns. You were in a river. There were enemy boats, ramps, whirlpools, weapon upgrades, etc. The names eludes me. Something about Serpent, maybe?

It hooked a lot of us.

Final Fantasy was developed during Square's brush with bankruptcy in 1987. In a display of gallows humor, producer / director Hironobu Sakaguchi declared that his "final" game would be a "fantasy" role-playing game, hence the title.

Yeah the original FF sucked more hours out of my childhood than anything else. Haven't played an FF game since, and after clicking the wiki link I feel like I could spend another 1000 hours on that game if I had an emu copy. I'd rate it the best NES game that I came across.

Mike Tyson's punch-out, SMB3, and Metroid get honorable mention...

Yeah, River City Ransom was amazing, right up there with Double Dragon 2 in terms of 2 player co-op fun.
