I have a very similar setup except I have a 2.8 ghz Pentium 4 and 4x512 RAM. I'll be installing Vista Business on it probably tomorrow night.

Looks fine but you will def. need 2 gigs of ram.... I have 2 gigs and the cache eats up 1,200 megabytes.

The cache is supposed to be eating up almost all of your free memory, this is by design. It's not true to suggest that the cache has to be 1200mb, on your system it's because your load is about 800mb and all the left over goes for cache use (until needed elsewhere)

From my understanding for 90% of daily putzing around 1GB will be plenty for Vista. It's only when you get hungrier apps like CAD, MMORPGs, Photoshop, etc. that will require a step up to 2GB or 3GB.

Vista as a whole will feel sluggish until SP2 is released in June/July. I just went full time to Vista yesterday, and unfortunately I can't do any Exchange administration on it. So, now I have a Virtual PC install of XP running happily along side it.

Uh SP2 will definitely not be out in June/July of 07. Dates for SP1 are not yet public, I don't think (and I'm not going to find out the hard way 🙂 ).

a friend of mine just installed it on his system:

p4 3.0ghz
1gb RAM
nvidia 6600gt

it worked smoothly and without a hitch, so you should be fine. btw, vista will report that ~80% of your RAM is always in use, regardless of how much you have. this is because it's caching it all. however, in reality it's using only a small percentage of that and doles the rest out to whatever programs you run.

however, if you want to play games, you might want to stay away for now. games run significantly (10 - 50%) slower on vista now, probably because of immature drivers.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm thinking about installing on a Sempron 3000+ system w/integrated Via graphics and 512MB RAM. Is anybody using Vista on a similar configuration? If so, how well does it work?

I ended up installing it, and it is awesome!

I had a few gripes at first, but some of them changed.
Like the desktop icon size. It made me feel like I was running at 800x600. Just gotta hold CTRL and then scroll with your mouse wheel to fix that.

Some software troubles, but a few had fixes.

AOL IM didn't work, but found the right version that did.
AntiVIR doesn't work... but it will later probably.
Azureus didnt work, but now I'll just use BitComet... for now.

Azureus is working fine here, do you have the latest?

That doesn't mean anything. If you have extra ram, guess what, you want your OS to use that most effectively. Which means the more memory you have, the more your cache will be used.

Anyone else feel like the "Volume" icon and "Network" icon in the taskbar near the clock look kinda primitive?

This is the second thread you've made the exact same post in, kidna strange.

I meant SP1. SP1 is slated for H2 release to provide support for admin tools which currently... erm, suck under vista.
