About to give up on Microsoft. Need alternative.

An ongoing error with my Zune, which has received pretty much no recognition from Microsoft over the past few months has me looking for alternative MP3 players. It is very disheartening because I have always been a huge fan of my Zune and have recommmended them to everyone that would listen. Alas, I can no longer do that and am beginning my hunt for a new MP3 player. (details of the Zune issue can be found here: http://forums.zune.net/515021/ShowPost.aspx )

Anyway, I really dislike iPods (the click wheel is absolutely horrendous and I have no idea how people can use that thing) and I do not really like iTunes, but the Touch has started to pique my interest. Does anyone have any other recommendations for an MP3 player?

My only needs are it must have a minimum of ~60GB of storage, other than that I'm not too fussed (no click wheel either!). That probably limits my choice to the 64GB Touch only, but figured I'd ask anyway.

Thanks.

The Zune 4.0 software is amazing though. Nothing else comes close. I don't own a Zune, I just use it with my windows mobile phone.

i got my kids 2g itouches a couple years ago and my son has the zuneHD now. i like the zuneHD much better than the itouch so far, the only thing i miss is the external speaker. but i can live without that. havent had any issues with syncing at all so far, hopefully that stays true.

I checked out the HD when I was in the States last time and did seem very nice, but 32GB is far too small for me. My 80GB is pretty much full, but I could trim it down to ~60GB if I absolutely had to. Also I'm kind of pissed of at Microsoft right now, so there's that.

I don't know, I guess the Touch is my only option, but I freaking hate iTunes. Anyone know if there is a new iTouch coming out soon? I haven't really seen much news, but thought maybe someone hear may have heard something.

The Archos, Zune, and ipod are about the only products in the large harddrive mp3 player category.
You could get an older ipod and run rockbox on it though.

all of the ipods got refreshed in september (they get updated every september btw), so now is a good time as any to get one. 64GB isnt a bad deal at all actually. i just dont like how apple is disabling/reserving the hidden features of the new touches for later (wireless N, fm transmitter/receiver), or just not even putting the feature in (mic, camera) until the next revision.

Yeah I just went ahead and picked one up. I can use it for a couple of weeks to see if I like it and just return it if I don't.

So far so good I guess, though adding all of my stuff has been taking a while and I'm not sure I like how it does some stuff, but I can probably get used to that.

Jailbreaking allows you to install apps from places than Apple, many many free apps, and other stuff....

Your head will asplode' trust me...

Where or how can I get this for my TP2 ?

Just download the Zune 4.0 software, sign up for the free 14 day Zune pass to try it out. All the songs you download are automatically added to your Windows Media Player library, which I'm sure you already know how to sync with your TP2. Thus you can get all the new Lady Gaga ringtones you want!

I can't get it to work. The BlackRa1n icon does not show up after doing the Jailbreak. I've tried it three times now. :hmm:

EDIT: NVM, figured it out.

EDIT2: Good lord, I have no idea what all of this crap is for? How the hell are supposed to know what all of these things are and which ones are useful? Anyone have recommendations?

Ugh, installed WinterBoard and it borked something up and iTunes is forcing me to restore and put all 40+ GBs of stuff back on the iTouch. :\

That was annoying. No more Jailbreaking for me.

Ok, because I am kind of stubborn, I tried Jailbreaking my iTouch again, a couple of times actually. The first time I tried Winterboard again and it forced me to restore, then I tried an alternative (BossPaper) and the exact same thing happened.

So I download and complete the whole Blackra1n thing, then I get Cydia downloaded and installed, but once I try to install an app from there, it forces me to restore the iTouch, which means I lose everything and have to start over.

I've done some Google work, but have not found much. Does anyonme have ideas on what I can do to fix this or what the hell I am doing wrong?

Thanks!

Winamp > Zune software, and with a plugin OP can sync his iPod using Winamp. I wouldn't touch the Zune software with a 10 foot poll.

It's actually not forcing you to restore. I'm assuming that when you install winterboard it has you reboot your iPod Touch, then when it boots up it defaults to the restore screen?

It's called a tethered jailbreak. Due to some kind of software/hardware limitations, the jailbreak is designed so you have to run Blackra1n every time you reboot your iPod. So, when you reboot it and it defaults to the restore screen, plug into your PC and run Blackra1n. This should solve the problem.

This is why I restored and now refuse to jailbreak my new 3GS. Fucking tethered jailbreak is a pain in the ass.

EDIT: I only know for sure this applies to the 3GS, but I'm assuming it would also apply to the latest gen iPod Touch.

Ahh, nice. I did not realize that, thanks. I actually tried Jailbreaking it again yesterday because I am kind of stubborn, but it did force me to restore and re-sync everything again.

I'm going to try and give running Blackra1n a shot after the reboot tonight.

I'm not sure what you're talking about with this tethered jailbreak. I have jailbroken about half a dozen 3GS iphones and another dozen or so 3G iPhones using blackra1n and have never had to re-tether it and run blackra1n just to reboot the phone/springboard. I think you have a different issue Xabanak.

edit: did some research on google, apparently for iphones purchased after week 41 and ipod touches have this issue but not previous to that. guess that explains it.

Not sure about the phones, but I was just reading the Blackra1n site regarding the iTouch and it says:

For those with the new iPod touch, BlackRa1n only supports a tethered jailbreak. This means that once jailbroken you should not let your battery die. If it does die you will need to reconnect it to the computer and use BlackRa1n to boot it.

I guess that does explain my issue. Never noticed that before.
