Anything I need to know? I will be getting a ceramic/resin filling, not amalgam. Does it hurt? How long does it take? Oh, and no "IT HURTS SO BAD YOU WILL DIE OMG OMG" posts please ;)

hurts some, but only when the 'drill" comes. nothing extremely painful, just a harrowing for a little. i guess it also depends how bad the cavity is. but everytime ive done it, there is a fair amount of pain, but nothing someone cant handle.

I had a few cavities filled and (4) wisdom teeth extracted a few months ago, so I sympathize with you. ;)

Just make sure the doc numbs the area before the drilling and grinding takes place.

Soft teeth run in my family, so i've had my share of fillings. The actual drilling and filling isnt bad. The worst part for me is getting the novocaine shots before the "operation", then having a numb mouth for an hour or two afterwards. blech.

How do you know it will just be a filling? Why didn't they do it on the last visit?

When I started getting my teeth worked on seriously, about 15 years ago, those "fillings" usually ended up being root canals with crowns. The cavity always seems to run a little deeper than they first thought...

The dentist I had at that time preferred to use the enamel colored filling material. He drilled out many of the silver fillings I got at the age of twelve, and replaced them with that tooth colored stuff. A few years ago, my new dentist started replacing those with the silver fillings! He doesn't care for the durability of the enamel fillings

No matter what work I have done on my teeth, be it cleaning, fillings, root planing or crown work, I ALWAYS have nitrous oxide gas! ALWAYS! Before you get the shot(s) to numb the tooth for the filling, the doctor will rub some kind of clove oil on that spot to numb it first. The shots don't usually sting too bad, unless he directly hits a nerve... YIKES! That feels like you stuck your tongue in a light socket! :Q

Hey, have fun! :D

My last checkup was in June so this will be a checkup/filling combined. She said that the cavity was very small and it would be safe to wait up to my next checkup (it was originally planned to be filled soon after). I don't think I'll have NO but I'll ask for some extra novicane, heh. How much does it hurt to have a needle in your gums? And for the love of god if she hits a nerve I will break every damn thing in that office :D

"...if she hits a nerve..."

It's not like they try! They told me that it's very hard to hit the nerve, but if they do the effects will last much longer. Shouldn't be necessary for a tiny filling, though. Don't worry about it, but DO get the nitrous! God, I LOVE that stuff!

What shouldn't be necessary for a tiny filling?

You won't need your jaw numb for very long. The whole thing will be done before you know it. You'll still be numb at home, drooling all over your lap :D

The only thing that is going to hurt is when the dentist inserts the needle into your gum around the tooth. He won't do it more than 3 or 4 times. After the 2nd or 3rd injection you won't feel a thing.

The needle in the gums hurts but not too bad and it's over pretty quick. The novocaine usually starts working pretty fast. I have to go in a couple weeks to get a cleaning and some fillings.:frown:

Had a bit of work done this year and it was a breeze. Make sure you request nitrous (it's pretty cheap), and local. Hopefully the room will have an overhead TV. If so get some headphones over the ears to drown out the sound of the drill. ;) Then get on asprin afterward ASAP.

My dentist also said silver fillings last longer than the bonded white fillings. I went with the later for spots that can been seen when I smile. :)

But no matter what you do if they do hit a never it's game over.

Just how likely is it that they will hit a nerve? Any way to avoid this? Nitrous Oxide = sleep?

Yes, it will hurt. And it will hurt more, more, more and more until finally, you just want to reach in with a pair of trusty Craftsman's and pull that sonofabitch out, but alas, you will die from anguish and shock before you can get to the pliers.

Depends on the tooth. If it's a molar and the cavity is deep your odds of flying out of that chair go up. ;)

The gas just "spaces you out". Since I'm usually spaced out to begin with not much phased me after the nitrous. ;) You're awake and still able to think and speak, just don't try to play basketball or anything.
