The drive is a 40GB formatted FAT32. Last time I fdisked i LOST everything, but I used a program to get it all back. Wouldn't like to do that again this time SO

If I do this.. will it work?
1) Backup all sensitive files (Homework, etc) on CDR just in case.
2) Copy everything to D: (Backup drive)
3) Unplug D: from motherboard and power.
4) Format C:
5) Install Windows Again.
6) Plug back in D:

Will all my data still be there? It's FAT32 so I doubt there's any protection that NTFS has. ANything I'm missing? Thanks!

___

While I'm here... temps of 66C/150.8F hot for my CPU?

That should work. I've had hard drives out of a case for over a year, plugged them into some older comp, and the files were still there.

as for your CPU, if it's not unstable, don't worry about it.

I'm afraid it might go soon.. so Maybe I should reapply some Arctic Silver III? Or change the faN? I mean a 5 dollar replacement is much more affordable than a 130$ CPU.

This is the reason why I always partition my primary hard drive into C: for windows only and D: for all installed programs and data. I change the "My Documents" to the D: drive as well. I also have a second hard drive where I back up all important data every day. If I "have" to install windows I just copy the entire C: drive to the D: or E: partition, format C: and reinstall windows. All I have to do is copy those few files that windows insists on putting on the C: drive from the backup drive, install my apps again (big pain) and I'm done.
This technique saved my a$$ back in my Win98 days when a driver made windows completely unbootable (even into safe mode).

I do the same, except I have 4 partitions, C for Windows and programs, D for CD Burning stuff, E for Music and F for backup. No problems yet:D

i dont understand your question...you say 'copy everything to D:. [...], unplug D. [...], plug back D
Why should the data on D get lost ???? What you do on C will (usually) not affect the physical data on D: - so, yes, everything on D: will be exactly how you copied it

However..its not clear what you mean with 'transfer data'...where was the data first...and how was it integrated in windows ? You can not copy data (which windows first had on C:) to DL, then re-install, use the same data (but this time the copy on D:)..and expect windows to work with the new location.

However, to make it short...and also to avoid FDISK (i never use fdisk, it's a tool for neanderthals...lol)....but instead get Powerquest PartitionMagic.
It has all to backaup/copy from/to drives...and also options if you move data (which was on C: first or so)...to D:..because it can remap drive letters.

Better said than done.. I know it's a hassle. Windows wouldn't boot the next day after reformat.. odd...

Likely, if you work with 2 HDs:

the HD you want to boot from was not set active..the active HD is the one win boots from...maybe the 2nd HD was active...but it had no master boot-sector..etc..etc...

recommended, again: PartitionMagic...or another nice tool, BootIt NG, it's a boot-selector tool, but it has many nice features like partition copy etc...allows to select from which drive to boot.

Addendum:

66.something DEGREES Celsius ?

Answer: YESSSSSSSSSSS - this is hot.....for an XP 1700

I have an 1800 (occed to 1900) which is *usually* idling at ~40C, never gets hotter than 49C, 50C. (As said: OCed !)

Right now i am running at 34C because i use a s/w PCI hack to cool down an additional 5-6 degrees.

I guess you dont even have a fan running....or did something seriously weird with your heat sink/cpu...otherwise how should it be possible to run 66C ????
