About to "Finish" Doom III

Well I've been slogging ... er playing through Doom III since July. I played it about 2/3 of the way through and got sick of it, so I decided to finish the game:

"The Way It's Meant To Be Played" (TM)
I.E. God Mode with All Weapons (iddqd and idkfa for you old timers)

So I'll finish it tonight. After that I got Quake 4, F.E.A.R, and Far Cry for Christmas.


What should I play?

(Rig for those to lazy to click the link - P4 3.2G, 1GB DDR400, 9600XT at 526/648)

(I also have $200 bucks to spend at Frys so I intend to buy a new card before the summer)

FEAR is great game if your can play it.

I played some multiplayer FEAR. It was fun but my FPS sucked at 800x600 with med/low details. I could play it but I might enjoy it better with a new card.

Quake 4 has the same look as Doom 3, so you'll prolly be able to play it with ease. Once you get the new card, FEAR.

If you have all 3 i suggest playing quake 4 first because its ai is nothing compared to far cry or F.E.A.R's which will probably make you not appreciate the game as much. It is still very fun

Combat in FEAR has a very cool feel to it. It's like eating really well-prepared food. Q4 is no slouch either, and is graphically more intense if you have the right hardware. Far Cry is just gorgeous too. You'll get killed sometimes just because you're looking at the lush environments instead of fighting. Hell dude, get all three!

I still can't figure out why FEAR is such a hog. It looks good, yeah. But not enough to justify its cost in terms of hardware.

Well I finished the game and Far Cry has the most votes so Far Cry it is. (Besides it should be the easiest of the three on my card)

I agree. HL2 I think looks just as good and I was able to run that at 12x10 without much problem (no aa of course).

The AI on the FEAR demo was awesome however.

I read some place that FEAR uses lighting effects in a very intensive way. Personally, I think the code could be refined a lot more. And yeah, it's all worth it just for the AI.

Oh I will definately play it. The multiplayer is a lot fun (especially since that was first multiplayer FPS ever) The demo was good too. I think I'm going to wait however until I replace my card with something in AGP like:

X850XT
X1600XT
X1700XT(If it shows up)
X1800XL (I can dream)
6800GS (maybe the new BFG GT clone)
7800GS (again with the dream)

Hmm, Quake 4 would be a better step from Doom III, same type of game. FEAR is more special effects with the ring girl running around. Far Cry is more of an outdoor game, think Half-Life in a new form.

Far Cry is alot of fun. It's definately a nice change of pace from the gloom and doom of ... well Doom.

I like shooting things I can see.

However its locking up and occasionally giving me VPU recovery messages. Even at stock (FYI ATI Tool doesn't detect any artifacts at stock on my card)

I'm downloading the 1.3 patch right now to see if that helps.

i am about halfway thru [i guess] . . . LOVE the AI [for a change]

for me . . . next will be Q4 . . .

Finished SeriousSam2 [$20 bargain bin now]. . . a 'parody' of the first two with good gfx and awesome foes and weapons . . . it's waiting for a Second Encounter

BTW, if you haven't yet played 'Chronicles of Riddick', it is NOT to be missed

Far Cry for the win... what a great game!

I honestly can't see how people could think FEAR is a better game. That game was a joke.. Far Cry pwns Fear no questions asked! I played FEAR for like 30 mins and never played it again. Sucked.

Hows that X850XT handle it?

Doom III looked and ran good at 8x6
HL2 looked and ran ok at 12x10
but FEAR does get choppy
