right now i am thinking about a nice 20 inch monitor that is widescreen to replace my 15 inch monitor. are there any specific ones you can recommend for under $300. i am looking at the Samsung 204BW right now. the reason why i didn't choose the 205 is because the 204 has free shipping right now.

6 ms response time is about right (too fast often sacrifices image quality) but you might want to consider 8 ms because it will be better quality and just as fast to the human eye...

Ask yourself if you really need wide screen. I thought about one myself, as they come much cheaper than the standard screens, but I realized that it would be practically useless since what I use mainly involves A4 documents or web pages, and since most designers these days get over-excited by background images and using non-scalable units, its not as if most web pages would adapt to such a wide screen anyway. The only time I think they're useful is when they have a swivel screen, allowing you to see more of the document.

This is of course unless you do more gaming, or watch movies, neither of which I really do. Ask yourself if you really need one.

I tend to agree that, now a days, a LCD in the 19-20 inch range is the way to go. But three reasons remain to go crt. (1) Cost
especially in the used market (2) Gamers may find a LCD can't keep up with screen refreshes in super fast gaming situations.
(3) A crt is able to run at any screen resolution the video card is capable of---while a LCD must pretty well run at its native resolution---which is now often 1280 x1024 or greater---and people like my wife are more comfortable viewing at 600x800.

Correction: 800x600

At home I'm using a viewsonic 21" widescreen. I've used 19-20" regular LCD's too. They aren't too shabby.

I just switched to 800x600, and it was too big. I didn't have room on the screen for anything. I can handle 1024x768 though. That's about as low as I'll go.
