About to buy a 5830?

Making an AMD with 965 BE and MSI 890GXM motherboard. Res I'm running right now is 1680x1050 but will more than likely move up to at least 1080p during the life cycle of the pc.

The build limit I gave myself was $800 and I've got $215 left to spend on graphics. Most everything is purchased, just stalling on vid card and cpu.

I was thinking that a 5830 was going to give me the best bang for the buck at $179.99 and I could add one in xfire later on down the road. I've read a lot of negative opinions on the 5830...

The other cards I've thought about are a

5770 for $135

460 for $229
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814261075

465 for $219
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127506

I've heard some great things about the 460, but my motherboard does not support SLI afaik. Also, is it so much better than the 5830 to warrant a $50 price increase?

I've also read lots of negative on a 465, but at $219 it seems like a solid deal even without the ability to xfire later.

The 5770 seems to be a solid choice with rave reviews, but will it be able to run todays games well at 1920x1080 and last me at least a year before I should have to xfire?

Any advice is well appreciated.

5830 at $180 is easily a better value than the GTX 460. 5830 at $200 and GTX 460 1GB at $230 match up pretty fair in value. You pay more, you get more. But a 460 is not worth a 27.7% price increase (only in the most Nvidia centric games might it perform that much faster). On average, the 460 1GB is 11-16% faster than the 5830.

Also considering the 5830 is $180 without rebate, unlike the 5770 which still needs a rebate to hit $135, it is worth the price. Crossfire two of them in the future for even more performance.

*based my average on this:
http://techpowerup.com/reviews/Axle/GeForce_GTX_460_768_MB/31.html

If only certain other sites would half care enough to do averages.

At $180 the 5830 is not a bad purchase. Most people were disappointed not with just its overall performance, but at its initial pricing. It's faster than the 5770 and slower than the 460, and it seems to be priced accordingly now. For all intents and purposes it uses the same power as the 460 and 5850, so it doesn't win the performance per power consumption department, but its overall usage isn't bad and doesn't require an over the top PSU.

And what I said about the 5830 also pretty much applies to the 465, although it does use a good bit more power than the 460/5850 while being slower. It fairs worse in the efficiency department. But I probably wouldn't consider it too bad; it's about on par with the last generation's high end (GTX 285).

Now the GTX 480... it needs a butt load of juice to deliver its performance.

The 5830 just isn't a good buy with the GTX 460 available, especially if you're an overclocker. And the GTX 465 is pretty much inferior to the GTX 460 in every way, so why buy it at the same price? TigerDirect has the 1GB GTX 460's in stock, with cashback it comes out to $200 - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...184&CatId=3670 .

I agree!

OP....Would have been better to get a mb that would allow sli even if you didn't plan on using it. Helps with resale value and system longevity.

If you upgrade to 1080, then you would need another 5830 if getting one now, however you wouldnt with the 460, savings in advance!

Either the 1GB 460 (at 230 USD) or the 5830 (at 180 USD) should be good value for what you are spending, just depends if you want that slight bump in performance.

Do stay away from the 768MB 460 though, if you intend to keep the card for a long time. A 1GB card would age much more gracefully, over the next generation or two of 3D applications. 1GB will be an important target for developers to shoot when considering frame buffer and texture; 768MB will be a very small minority.

I would buy the 5770 for $135 because you are still at 1680x1050. Pocket the $95 price difference from the GTX460 into a safe place for your next upgrade. I can easily recommend the 460 if you plan on overclocking. Otherwise it's not worth the extra $100 imo.

The 5830 got a bad reputation because when it launched it was way too expensive for the performance it delivered. But at $180 it's not a bad purchase at all in my opinion.

For $180 the 5830 is a good buy. However, all things being equal, I would go for the 460. However, if your MB only supports x-fire AND you realistically believe you'll use it, then the choice is made.

For $250, a 5850 is great value. I'd say better value than a GTX460

I haven't been looking at component prices for more than a couple weeks. Do you think prices of 5850s are going to continue to drop so more of the manufacturers are around the $250 level?

Even if all of them drop in price you cannot go wrong with XFX and its lifetime warranty.

It looks that way, just checked out newegg and a lot of them have dropped prices. The twin Fozr looks good for $260 if you don't mind rebates. Thats the one I would have. Maybe the other guys can chip in with their opinions.

idk, I have no experience with that particular design of 4890. Its hard to believe that they would repeat the same mistake twice. I have a XFX 5750, same design but a lot smaller. I know its not fair to compare as 5750 is way easier to cool than a 5850, but the reviews are fairly positive so far.

Just my 2c.
