About time I hang my LCD TV... but I need help... UPDATED ORIGINAL THREAD...

Update!

Okay, I have some what of a problem. I want to hang my LCD TV, but I can't figure out the best way to do it.

As you can see from my drawings the studs are as indicated, and there is a concrete wall behind the wall (my wall is drywall) (2-3.5 inches between the wall and the concrete). It's a 32" TV and the dimensions are approx 29x18 and it's about 50 lbs.

Now the kicker is I want the TV to be able to swivel depending on what side of the room I am on.

Given my conditions what is my best bet of going at this,

priority:
0)SECURE!!!
1) easy
2) cheap
3) quick

Here's the wall looking at it head on with dimensions
Here's the wall looking at it head on without dimensions

Here's a birds eye view of the room

Thanks,

Don R.

Masonry bit, masonry screws. I've bought the screws that have the bit right in the package.

A power drill will be your friend too. Cordless prolly won't have the stamina.

would that be okay to replace the regular (wall stud) screws with?

Why replace them?

If you can't hit a wall stud with the TV mount hardware you'll have to mount it to the concrete.

Don,

You're making this too complicated.

?) Can you put 2 of the screw mounts into a stud or do you have to be in the center of the 2 studs?

It's pretty unusual to have studs that are 50" apart. If you can put a couple of the screws into a stud, then do that and use toggle bolts (90lb rated) for the other screws. If you can't use a stud at all, it's more complicated.

I'm assuming standard construction (studs attached to the concrete), so if that isn't the case you may have deeper troubles.

update... the concrete is not 6-12" as i thought... in actuality its about 3/4 the legnth of my index finger apart from the wall... could I use that as the stud and just drill right into that?

You might get #0 but 1/2/3 are not going to happen. You need a mount for you tv that you can hang your body weight from (or nearly)to be secure from you yanking the set from side to side.I would look to put it on some shelves are what ever.Fool around and see that tv layin on the ground, fubr.

the way the mount is, i have to screw it in the middle of where my tv will be, there are no studs in between the two i have listed

I refuse to believe your studs are 50" on center. Look again.

Ya, that's nearly 1.5 meters, they should be much closer.

FYI, a stud is a vertical piece of wood or metal in a framed wall, not just whatever you mount your TV to.

Ditto. IIRC should be every 18" or so.

Don,

If the studs are really that far apart then you should be able to push the drywall in pretty easily. If that is the case then you have some work ahead of you. I tend to agree with the other posters that usually there will be studs every 18", or sometimes 24", but almost never 50". If the studs are that far apart you will have to rebuild that part of the wall to hang your TV there. Even if you put concrete anchors in, the drywall isn't supported and the mounting bracket would flop around. It can be hard to detect studs when the wall is backed with concrete, you should double check.

The thump test is more acurate than a stud finder when it's backed with concrete. Just tap along the wall, and listen for the sound to change. You can find studs with way. Their should be at LEAST 1 stud between those two.

based on your replies to your thread, your best and cheapest option is to have a professional do it.

It would be the cheapest because you wouldn't have to pay for a new TV since it wouldn't fall off the wall...

Do you really want to take a gamble with your LCD TV not being mounted properly???

I would guess it cost around $250-$400 to have it done. Additionally, they should be bonded, so any mishaps to your set (drops, scratches, etc) would be covered by them.

good luck though...
