About those console price-cuts...

The current generation of gaming machines is experiencing an unprecedented level of success. Need proof? Look no further than the price tag. When the original PlayStation was released, it sold like gangbusters. Nineteen months after it hit shelves, though, Sony (SNE: Research, Estimates) had lowered the price to $149. We're now 29 months into the launch of PlayStation 2 and it's holding firm at $199. A price cut is widely expected in May, but publishers and analysts are starting to reign in expectations for that as well.

$179 is being batted around as a potential new price point, rather than the $149 everyone was so certain about last year. Gysi said THQ expects the average selling price of the PS2 to drop just 15 percent this year. And Activision (ATVI: Research, Estimates) CEO Bobby Kotick on March 4 even suggested that Sony might not lower PS2 prices at all. For all the cushioning, though, $149 is still a relatively safe bet. Sony's sales would definitely suffer if it opted for smaller cuts than Microsoft (MSFT: Research, Estimates) and Nintendo, which are both desperately fighting for market share.

Interesting stuff...

I did a search for consoles and nothing came up if this is infact a repost the thread title will change.

This is what caught my eye. I hadn't heard much about the PS3, but... wow... how do you define "cinematic-quality"?

If it lives up to the hype, the PS3 will be 1,000 times more powerful than the PS2, offer cinematic-quality games and will offer video recording similar to a TiVo device.

We will definitely know whether or not its a hoax. At the PS3 press conference someone is going to ask that question whenever that commences.

This is beyond hype.

Typical Sony marketing. To be expected, they said similar things about the PS2 vs PS1.

On the whole though I think the console market is undergoing another golden age. Nearly everyone has/wants/will get a console, a far cry from a few years ago.

I don't see anything happening this year in terms of price cuts. The Gamecube has its strongest games coming out in the summer - Wario World, F-Zero, Final Fantasy etc. etc. Why cut the prices more when you have such a good line-up of games? It makes no sense. I don't see the PS2 or the Xbox cutting prices for the same reason - the games are getting better and better, and prices are already very reasonable.

If anyone wants a system I'd pick one up ASAP - these free game promotions are not going to last forever. I agree with the other poster that consoles are going through a golden age right now - similar to when the first NES and SNES came out. It's a good time to be a gamer.
