About those ads in the back button

You know, when you click back, nothing happens. So you click the drop down arrow and see that there are ads in there? Those are annoying. I didn't know if AT did that always, but seems to do it now, anywho, if I suscribe to the forums will these go away?

Aah... yes, it has to do with... ugh... a file on your computer... it's at the tip of my tongue. CRAP! :|

I'll get back to you when I remember that actual name. 😱 But anyway, it's a file that has a huge listing of addresses on it, addresses that your browser will skip over when encountered. Do a file search for a file containing the address of one of the ad-servers that you seem to be missing.

/edit IT'S THE "HOSTS" FILE! Look for a file called HOSTS!

The drop down arrow only shows the last few places you have viewed. If you don't view ads, it won't appear there. I've never seen a site I didn't just view appear there. So could you explain your situation more?

It happens when there is an timed HTTP refresh used in the page that features the ads in an <iframe>

AT doesn't do it. It's completely up to the ad company.

Thanks saltboy, I think I got it figure out. Basically what was going on, was when I'd hit "Back" nothing would happen. ( but really, the ad page was getting a hit I think ) So I would have to use the drop down list on "Back" to go to the previous page, which was now 1 or 2 back, underneath the ads.

The ad server BTW was realmedia. Grrr I hate them.

EDIT: Bleh, they're still there. This sucks. 🙁

Actually, what pisses me off is when you go to a thread and yuo try to copy and paste the address to someone, but the URL you copy from the address bar is an ad. This is in Opera btw.

IP's of the ad servers. It basically tells your computer to look at 0.0.0.0 when it gets a request from the ad server to display ads on the webpage. I had a HOSTS file once. Didn't like it, blocked some of the stuff I wanted to see. I now use Opera 7 so no pop-up for me!!!

Just curious, what DOES your hosts file contain?

The HOSTS file has a bunch of servers on it. And I added, "127.0.0.1 network.realmedia.com" and some other variations, but none of them worked.

Ahhh! There's the problem. You're supposed to REMOVE the line. You'll get the ad, unfortunately, but your problem will go away.

LOL, no wonder your "search for files containing" didn't make sense to me. I see I have to remove the line, then I will see the banner ads, but the back button thing will be gone? ( Is this why many of the banner ads I've been seeing are appearing as empty? )
