You could always play something through them then drag the balance to the right

I'd say it's whatever is convenient for you. I would say the controls need to be easily accessible. If after you place the speakers and the channels are reversed (left coming out of the right speaker and the right coming out of the left) then just switch your interconnects if you are able.

And if you can't switch the speakers themselves, you can switch the L/R signal before it gets to your speakers.
