i have an oem copy of NERO that is from an Aopen CDRW drive that bit the dust(out of warranty). i would love to still use the software, but somewhere there is a switch that only allows them to be used w/ Aopen drives. my feeling is since i owned the drive i have payed for the software and i want to use it w/ my replacement drive (trusty old 4x4x24 Teac).

any ideas?

My guess is that there are entries in the registry. If you feel brave, you might run REGEDIT from the run command and go to EDIT/FIND Try searching on Aopen and see what registry entries pop up. You can probably delete them. Just be careful that what you delete. As an alternative, try uninstalling Nero, and reinstalling it. Hopefully registry references to the Aopen drive would be removed, but very often they aren't.

I'd be surprised if the OEM copy of Nero on the disk is customized only for Aopen drives. So if you could remove any references/registry entries, reinstalling the software may cause it to recognize the new drive.

The software is not customized.

The serial number you used when installing Nero determined the OEM limitation.

If you were to "acquire" a standard SN instead of an OEM one, you could reinstall from the same CD and have support for your Teac.

Hope this helps...

The OEM copies of Nero that came with my AOpen and Lite-On drives didn't ask for a serial number when I installed them...

And they won't work with any other drives.

But yet I don't think they are a specially written version. Hmm, have to think about it a bit.

Workin: Did you uninstall a previous version of Nero prior to installing your OEM version?

If not, this might explain why you weren't prompted for a serial number.

<< Did you uninstall a previous version of Nero prior to installing your OEM version? >>

No, it was a brand-new installation on a brand-new computer.

I've built more than a dozen PC's lately using CDRW drives that came with OEM copies of Nero, and not a single one has asked for a serial number, or even provided a serial number, for that matter.

not only that, i found the Nero OEM to work with the Plextor and a older Yamaha i have laying around.

it was version 5.5.3.something and it didn't ask for a serial number, AND, when i went to nero's website, it allowed a free update to the latest version that offers XP OS support, 5.5.5.1, works for me.

the only time i ran into this problem is with my Archos CD-r external for my laptop, the software was crippled to work only with that drive, but that is because of the special drivers needed to get the PCMIA card to work, i am sure.

When you install an OEM version of Nero it puts the OEM's serial # in these two registry keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\Info]
"Serial5"="xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\Info]
"Serial5"="xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx"

If you have proof of purchase, you can buy a registration # for a full version for $19.
With some cdr's going for as little as $40 after rebates, you really can't expect to get a full $50 (download price) version of Nero included.
$19 seems pretty reasonable to me, and you get to support a small company with a great product that many are pirating.
There is a place to enter the new serial # under help.
From Nero's FAQ:

"Q.: Nero came with my recorder. I bought another recorder, but Nero doesn?t work with it. Why not?
You have an OEM version that works only with the brand of recorder you bought. To use Nero with another recorder, you may purchase the full version for a small additional cost. Click here for details.
Note: When you order the update, you will need to have the serial number of your current version. If you don?t know your serial number, this is how you can find it:
Click the Windows Start button, then click Run.
Type the word ?regedit? (without the quotes), then click OK.
The Registry Editor window appears. In the data ?tree? on the left, double-click the corresponding keys until you have opened the following full key:
HKEY _CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero ? Burning ROM\info
In the box at right, double-click the name serial and write down your serial number"
