About my Thunderbird...

I can junk it for ~$300, or make it fully functional for around $2000.

What would you do? It's almost not worth the hassle to get a refund.

Also, does the Ford V8 of that era have the same head gasket unreliability as the V6? If putting a new V8 in there would be better than putting in a new V6 I'd rather do that.

Can that be done? Can a Thunderbird originally equipped with a V6 have a V8 put in with no trouble? If I decide to buy a new engine for it should I replace the transmission at the same time? Wouldn't that practically give me a Thunderbird with 0 miles?

I wouldn't have a problem fixing the vehicle if it was mine. The headgaskets on 3.8L are the weakest link in the vehicle. The question you need to ask yourself is "Can I buy a better car for 2000.00 than this one?"

The Ford V8, 4.6L, does not have a headgasket issue like the 3.8L V6. But it's not a simple swap, the motor and trans will fit into the vehicle, but you will need all the additional parts to go with it. Like, suspension, cooling system, PCM and engine/trans related electronics, motor and trans mounts, driveshaft, fuel pump. Most likely you would need a donor car.

One other option is to locate a V8 model T-bird that has minor body damage and use you car as a donor.

Too bad you don't live near me, I could do the work for much less.

My last FORD lasted longer (and for negligible repair costs) than you've probably been on this Earth, fvcktard! :|

That's not true, I also perfer the hefty iron cars of the past. I still looking for a Torino to replace my Mustang.

The rental I'm using is a FWD, POS. Feels like I'm motoring around town on my riding lawnmower, with about as much room for passengers! :disgust:

obviously in your case, tact and wisdom don't seem to increase with age, GroundZero. 🙂

Pretending for a minute that Chevy is more reliable than Ford, what Chevy car would you actually buy?

Cavalier? Maybe if you are gay...
Tracker? Maybe if you are gay...
Corvette? Maybe if your penis is 2"
Monte Carlo? Maybe if you like muscle cars without any muscle...

That leaves you with a Camaro and Malibu. One is a fine sedan in a very crowded market and the other is, well, a Camaro...

I cant get into the Ford Vs Chevy thing,I've had good luck with both.Sounds like you are thinking about throughing good money after bad. Cash out .

And your uber intelligent input to this topic is to "...just shoot it and give it to the junkyard."

Fvcktard!

My last Ford was on the road from 1977 till... heh, the SOB is still running!

Not to create any confrontation, but it's not because you have a ford that lasted long that all fords are gonna last long ... They're known to have bad reliability. But the point of the thread is not about that ... and I have no answer for the person's question.
sorry..

As a retired mechanic, who has worked on most makes and models, I've seen unreliable cars from each of the big three. I won't go into details but I have always stated it's how you take care of a vehicle, not who made the vehicle, that determines the reliability of a vehicle.

I agree with Quixfire...

And speaking of Ford's, the 1967 Mustang I sadly sold last year is still on the road and eating rice for breakfast...
