Based on the historical trends, About how long will it take for the QX9770 to drop below $300?

Will there be faster Socket 775 CPU or has INTEL phased out this socket and future improvements made only on 771?

Ummm, Nehalem is due to come out in the next 6-12 months, they've already stopped working on the 775 cpu's, although they still produce them. For the majority of computer users, I don't think they'll need any better than 775 though. And uhh, maybe when Nehalem comes out, there'lll be a nice price drop on all current cpu's again.

you are aware the question your asking is something simular to, Hi when is the porshe GT2 new going to drop below 60G's??

Only answer... same as your cpu question... maybe USED and a very long time from now?

You will never see the QX9770 below $300. You will never see any Extreme Edition CPU sell for under $300. You can't buy a Pentium 965 (new) for under $300 either.

Intel's XE chips never drop to reasonable prices. They just fade away as they become obsolete.

Sadly, as everyone else has said, it will never happen. I am right now hunting for a deal on ebay for one at approximately $600.00.

I am planning on riding one of those overcloked to 3.8 - 4 Ghz until the dust on the Nehalem settles down and most of the kinks with the motherboards are worked out. (mid 2009 or so)

We'll see ;)

Yes, unless you are willing to wait a while (1-2 yrs) and are willing to buy "used and very much abused" QX9770's from Ebay or elsewhere.

Yes... welcome to the club. The most you could upgrade to would be the extreme quads, or their locked multiplier counterparts such as the q9550 / q9650 (not here yet).

After that, it's time for Nehalem!

Never. Generally, Intel stops making Extreme Edition chips instead of dropping the price.

Never. Intel is old timer in this business. They are segmenting the market, so that the extreme and high end chips will always be sold for high price, and then be replaced by newer extreme chips while the old stuff are sold out. The prices will never go down because they want to hold their margin,

grab a Q9650 then.

There showing to be pretty good expecially with that 9x multi.

Your not going to find a EE chip for even 600.

Trust me, bump it up maybe 100 to 150 then possibly a QX9650.

Oh id look for a QX9650 over a QX9770 btw.

Intel goofed on the QX9770. Its the same chip but higher FSB on a already FSB limited chip.

It's not a goof if people buy them at prices higher then the QX9650. That's just good marketing.

very true, but to the budget minded, and overclocker, its a goof! :p

However since when did budget and QX fit in ths ame sentence.... *sigh*

Oh I budgeted very specifically for my QX :D

Seriously though the only reason I can see for Intel rolling out those QX9770's was to give peace of mind to someone (insert big name OEM here, such as DELL or HP) that these specific Yorkies were rigorously "pre-qualified" by Intel to operate at the 400MHz FSB so when the boutique shops made their teh-uber $10k builds they didn't have to dick around with OC'ing the chipsets/FSB while worrying about taking on the business risk of having to warranty all the underlying components of such systems.

For the DIY enthusiast builders I agree the QX9770 is kinda pointless as we'll just cycle thru mobo's until we find one that supports the FSB we want with our QX9650.

The goal of the extreme chips was to catch the most spoiled, stupid kids on the market and make a little extra money from them. Intel will keep the price where it is but the model right under will probably go down a couple hundred.

Spoiled stupid kids? No need to bash something for not being the most cost effective, if you're a hardcore overclocking enthusiast the unlocked multiplier is definitely worth the price you pay for it. No need to bash something you don't want.

Not everyone's time is worth zero money.

There are some of us whose time is worth considerable money, considerably more than the $800 upfront cost to get an extreme processor to perform our computing needs in less time.

The choice of words in your posts invokes an image of you being a jealous kid, a kid jealous of the other kids whose parents have a little money to spend on their kids...
