why are airlines charging for checked bags? are they that poor?

next thing you know, we'll have to pay to use the restroom.

Because people on a 3 day trip want to pack everything in their house with them because they bought 10 suitcases for $99.99 and want to make sure they are all filled.

14 WN segments...you poor bastard. I do about 2-3 a year out of 70-80 and that seems like too many. Someone once suggested that I take an 8 plus hour trip from PBI to LAX (stopping in ATL) on WN because it was $40 cheaper than flying direct on AA (where I have status). I think I melted them with my glare.

I blame Delta and their fortress hub DTW. Unless I want to fly to ORD, DFW, PHL or DCA I have to fly DL or WN (WN is the second largest DTW flier)and even then those get expensive. $800 dollars to get to DFW on direct AA flight in July. I can't remember the last time I left DTW on something other than DL or NW that wasn't an award ticket

Since DL will often fuck you over on pricing I sometimes have to travel WN. I almost had to go to MSP this July. Freaking $900 for all 5 of their direct 2.5 hr hub to hub flights on DL. I took a screenshot I was so shocked. WN was going to be $425.

Its odd how much different WN is. Even my wife notices. Granted she was with me on the MCO -PHX flight which was definitely the worst and not something I recommend to anyone

Most airlines don't charge for the first checked bag.

 American, United, US, Delta, Spirit, Alaska, Frontier, Hawaiin, Virgin ALL charge for your first checked bag domestically. That only leaves Southwest and JetBlue as those that don't.

Now internationally is different and there are various ways to get the charges waived like a certain co-branded credit card but to say that most don't charge for the checked bag is a bit off.

What's the problem if the luggage fits in the overhead rack? I've got a resizable carry on that generally doesn't fit the stupid template at the gate, but I've yet to have issues fitting it above the seat.

The problem is that airplanes only have this much room, and people who board towards the end have to check their only bag, which can be inconvenient. Happened to my wife this week, she had a small bag, but had to gate check it because airplane was out of space.

Yea that is some suckage about DTW. My home airports are SFO and ORD so at least AA has to contend with actual competition on a lot of routes so stuff doesn't get that nuts. I'll fly WN if it is something oddball like TUS to SAN or where the others are 2 or 3 times the price. Fortunately I can mostly avoid it. WN is truly the Greyhound bus of the skies.

I do wish AA was made to give up more than a couple gates at ORD to get the merger with AS done. Letting Virgin, Spirit, and Jet Blue wedge their foot in the door a bit more would help keep UA/AA honest.

Hmm you know... thinking about it... I think I did pay to check my bag. Originally, I was 100% sure that I didn't the last time that I flew, because I couldn't remember doing it, but now I wonder if that's just because of how mundane the whole check-in process is. You scan your card on the machine to pick up your ticket... yeah, I have a checked bag... yeah, here's my card... yeah, I'll go give it to the people at the counter... yeah, I'll attempt to have a nice flight.
