About DVDRoms.. Just bought one.. What are 'Regions'? and more Qs

I just bought a nice Toshiba 12x DVD rom..

Now I have couple of questions:

1. What's this whole thing about DVDs being Region 1, Region 2.. What is this? Is this important to know?

2. Just what exactly is the term "Rebadged" mean? Is this a good thing? no?

3. I heard DVDs or CDRs can be hacked to gain higher performance.. What is this? Is this for real? How can I do that with my Toshiba 12x???

thx in advance..

To prevent DVD's being exported from areas of the world where they're released earlier, regions were implemented. Basically they divide the world into sections called regions, & all (well, most anyway) DVDs/players are encoded with a region. You have to math regions to play the disc.

"Rebadged" means one manufacturer made it and a different manufacturer put their name on it. Could be good or bad.

Hacking? Only some, not Toshiba though. Mainly with rebadged drives where one manufacturer's firmware provides better performance than another's.

I take it I don't normally have to worry about Regions as long as I buy DVDs within US?

does it matter between East/West coast? I hope not

The whole of the US (and rest of North America) is Region 1 - there's no East coast/West coast distinction. Europe and Japan are Region 2, so unless your player is modified to be region-free, don't buy any DVDs from Europe/Japan/anywhere else if you ever come over on vacation...
