I am tired of the slow modems and want to upgrade to DSL and have a few questions about it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
First of all what kind of hardware support should i need? I just went and bought one of those linksys ethernet card (10/100, OM deal going on for last few days) which says its compatable with cable/DSL.
Second our local telephone company doesn't provide DSL. So can I still take it from any other DSL provider in our area like I choose internet access internet service provider through modem?
Third if so how can I contact the service provider (I am from south western virginia)? i.e. basically who are the good DSL sevice provider and any contact no will be of great help. Thank you in advance

 
Just as you can't connect to an ISP with an analog modem until the telephone company runs a phone cable to your house, so you can't connect to an ISP with a DSL modem until the telephone company develops a DSL facility at its switching station, including DSL modem banks that connect to users' DSL modems. Until then, you're shut out. In addition, for DSL to work you've got to be within a few miles of the switching station, not as the crow flies but as the wire is strung.
 
Just in case his CO is DSL capable, but his telco is still not offering it. Why don't you check at dslreports for your zip code availability and what isps are better in your area.?

It's a known fact that in many cases the telcos are the last ones to use their own lines to proviode DSL.
