About DIVX

Could we discuss DIVX? I'd like some help on mkaing my own DIVX because I rarely get to watch the DVDs I rent in time, we rent from a cheap store but its only 1 night, so I'd rather make it onto DIVX and watch it on my computer then remove it.

Would it be alright to talk about encoding DIVXes? I won't discuss where and how to get DIVXes though.

NOTE: I am not here to argue, just wanted to know the mod(s)'s stance on this issue

We don't believe you.
You have asked to swap DivX files with other members here in the past.

The Napster controversy seems to have led a lot of people to think that all entertainment should be free, and if it isn't, then we'll just rip it off. AnandTech takes a very dim view of this sort of thing.

<< We don't believe you. >>

-ouch 🙁
You did'nt have to, I just wanted to make an example.

I didn't ask I requested, but thats almost the same, so you're right there. But that has nothign to do with asking on how to make it.

- You're telling me that your HD has absolutely no mp3s or warez? lol 🙂

You didn't answer my question: Can we still talk about DIVX encoding?

"if you have to ask don't do it"

I think the answer to your question is no, if you can't / don't watch them, why rent them?, may I suggest a service like netfilx 20 bucks a month for all the DVD rentals you can handle 🙂

Well making into divx then removing it may be still technically illegal but at least your not distributing it. But would you really honestly remove it right after watching it? Maybe so, but just think of all the people who rip them and don't delete them but rather distribute.

I see divx threads are being deleted so no I don't think we are allowed to discuss hardly anything about divx. You'll have to find a different forum.

I don't see what the problem is. We talk about Mp3s right? We talk about ripping off companies to the best we legally can right?

Actually I don't see anything more wrong with divx conversations than mp3 conversations. Same principle. There are legitimate uses for mp3's and divx movies. Not only is divx great for making home videos, burning to a cd and mailing ot friends and relatives, but I work in the college computer lab. Frequently I'll burn my dvd movies to divx and bring them with me to watch on the slow nights that I"m there late (we have no dvd drive).

edit: I doubt this is going to be read by the mods but I will agree that some users will take advantage of divx for illegal things. While Alpha may very well read more info about pirating movies, others on the forum get help copying copy protected software and its not unheard of to see "back up" games posted for sale in FS/FT. The bad seeds are the exception to the rule and I do think that its a bit of a shame that whats going to be a talked about by many as a revolutionary video compression scheme, is going to be a taboo topic for a while here. Many websites already have ditched realvideo and other poor quality standards for divx compression.
