About Digital Cameras/Camcorders

Are there any consumer digital camcorders that are capable of taking very hi-qual stills (as in 1024x768 at least) and recording at hi-qual (although I'm not sure what the quality ranges for video are)? I want to be able to take perfect digital video and huge pictures -- can one device do both?

Samsung made a dv camcorder with a built in 4 mp camera.. I'm not linking it because its the most ridiculous invention ever made - it's like they glued two cameras together.. AVOID IT.. 1024x768 is pretty mediocre for a digicam... Just get a nice digital camera and a nice digital camcorder.. I always avoid 2 in ones - they usually are just two mediocre products in one.. And if you drop/break them you're out of two machines instead of one.. My pal's multifunction printer/fax/copier/scanner is having printing issues - now instead of being out a printer he's out a printer/fax/copier and scanner.. I told him that exact thing and he ignored me then.. loser!

freedom is right, the samsung looks so fugly. I would get the panasonic 3CCD comcorder, best out there. 3 mp still photos

The new panasonic line or 3ccd cameras are awesome (3ccd starting at $750?!??!) but they have a 3mp still photo mode?! That's insane! I just ordered a 3mp digital camera and would of saved that money towards the pana had I known! That's great for a camcorder..

some sonys have good photo capabilities..however, still no match for any entry level digital cam

did some research...looks like 3ccd takes still images up to 1mp only.

Short answer: No.

If you want a video camera, get a video camera. If you want a still camera, get a still camera.

There's nothing on the martket (yet) that does an acceptable job at both roles.

I'm sure that time will fix that, but we're not there yet.

My theory - even if this perfect hybrid exists, why bother? Multifunction printers have existed for years but none of them are as good as a great standalone printer and a great scanner (they all have very mediocre scanners).. Again, what if your scanner breaks or you want a new printer with higher resolution? Combining functions will just screw you in the end..
