About a year ago my Dad's VW GTi got stolen...

So about a year and a half ago my Dad bought a cheap "racing" VW GTi to get him to work and back. A definate A-to-B car, no interior, etc. Anyway, it developed problems soon, he couldn't get it started, so it sat on the side of the road in front of their place for a few weeks. One weekend the GTi disappears, my Dad thinking it was towed called the Police, and they had no record of it being towed. Since the car cost my Dad next to nothing, he just forgot about it.

That was about a year ago.

This past weekend My brothers and I go 4x4ing a little bit in one of my brothers Diesel Dodge Ram 2500. It's the first time he's taken it off roading since moving to Hawai`i.

After about 10 minutes into the hills of Kapa`a, what do we find - a familiar VW.

Sorry no beat down video.

Verified it was my fathers with a quick vin check.

Anyway, if your car got stolen in Kailua or Kaneohe, you might want to check the Kapa`a back hills (on Kapa`a Quarry road).

I notice there are a ton of other cars down there... my guess is that the local authority (or just a single person), takes the cars off the roads and throws them down there.

How much DID it cost your dad? I couldn't imagine just forgetting about a missing car, unless it cost less than $300...

It was only $500. And it was broken. That's what really surprised my Dad is that he couldn't get it started, but some enterprising thieves got it started and got it way up in the hills.

I think that the problem in Hawaii is that it is prohibitively expensive to junk your own car. Couple that with lax enforcement in tracking down the owners of these cars and people choose the cheaper method of rolling it down a hill. I was amazed at how many junked cars you see on the side of the road.

It's a good thing we didn't find someone driving the car. My brother would be in prison and I'd have it on video tape (HDV, too). My Dad had a good laugh at seeing his old car all smashed up.

Yeah, Hawai`i has a problem with stolen cars. If you call to report your car stolen, chances are the cops wont even show up. When my Dad's van got stolen (both times), the cops never showed up and the dispatch said they we're going to send someone.

Anyway, lots of the cars there (majority) had mainland US tags, military I presume. I was really surprised how far in some of the cars got into the hills.
