About 6800GT overclocking

I got a BFG 6800GT a couple of weeks ago and was running it straight out of the box at 400/1.1. Scored 11500 on 3dmark03 and was quit happy. So today I decided to see how far I can take the sucker. Bumped it up to 420/1.1. Test the changes..passed. Ran rthdribl demo, no artifacts..temps topped out at 85C. Kinda warm, but not to bad at all. Stable right? Seemed like that to me. So I benched it...got 10500 3Dmarks!!!! A lower score with a higher core clock. WTH?..

After some investingation on the web..seems that my card is throttling to a lower core speed if the temps get too high. I don't think 85C is too high. Seems perfectly stable with no artifacts. So why is it throttling. Makes no sense to me. What happen to the good ol' days when the card would just reboot! At least then it would be quite evident what the limit is. So for everyone getting some major overclocks with these cards, make sure u benched it to see if its really "stable". No point in running it at a higher clock when its just going to "down clock" when u play games. I sure hope a Artic Silencer will solve this problem for me.

Happy overclocking! ;)

EDIT: Also..does anyone know how to turn this throttling off??

throttling at 85C? I thought it wouldn't do that until 120C (Core Slowdown Threshold in driver's temp page)

Too high of overclock can also cause throttling. It's not just high temps only. Both can damage the card so it's good thing that it throttles when pushed too far. Think of it as safety net for foolish overclocks.

Ok, so I just tried out OC'ing my GT for the first time...
Set it to Ultra speeds, played doom3 timedemo a couple times, everything's great.

Ran 3dmark '03, demos stalled in some points and I lost points...
Googled a bit, then set the 2d speed to same as 3d speed, ran 3d mark again, and it worked great (gained points over stock speeds like expected)

maybe something like that is what happened?
