Abortion Pill RU-486 - How can ANYONE be in favor of this?

I've just heard a radio rebroadcast of a discussion of the abortion pill RU-486(mifepristone) by Danco Labs, also known as the "morning after" pill. I have also read several articles on this; many are listed here:
http://www.ru486.org

This does not only concern the subject of abortion, but several other areas as well.
The FDA acted with gross negligence. The FDA took 6 months to review this drug, one of the fastest approvals ever. Measures were taken to expedite the process that are normally only reserved for "emergency drugs" such as those dealing with AIDS/HIV and other terminal ilnesses.

They ignored the many numerous warnings from well-known and well-respected organizations and individuals. The FDA recommends that RU-486 be taken in conjunction with Cytotec, a drug that induces contractions. This drug, made by G.D. Searle Corporation, is made for treating peptic ulcers. The maker warns that Cytotec should not be taken by pregnant women, as serious injuries can result. Studies have shown that Cytotec and RU-486 have caused serious injuries/pain and even death to women that take the drug. The problems created by these drugs have been shown throughout Europe and other parts of the world.

The restrictions that the FDA attached to the drug are far too limited. They say that RU-486 can be administered by a physician or any person under the supervision of a physician. This leaves the arena open for anyone to administer this drug, even people untrained in the drug or even medecine.

This is only a few of the problems with the drug. The drug is being produced in China, which opens a whole new realm of potential contamination.

The drug RU-486 is extremely dangerous to the women who take the drug. There are virtually no requirements on what information must be commmunicated to the potential user of the drug.

I personally am very strongly pro-life. However, the issue at hand is of concern to both pro-life and pro-choice individuals.

/Puts on flame suit.

I too am strongly pro-life and am opposed to the legalization of RU-486. But, it is done. Unless some of the drug makers take steps of their own to keep their product out of the mix, I doubt anything will change.

now as for how smart it was to use those medications, as you were talking about how they shouldn't be taken by pregnant women etc., i think that it was stupid. the idea and intent was good, IMHO, but they need to research it more

I am pro life, but even more I am pro choice. RU-486 is a legal choice in an area where personal freedoms and choices are being severely restricted. Sorry, but I support this option.

I hope that the new administration will do something about this. At the very least this drug should be banned until much more extensive studies are done.

hopefully people will do something about this and stop letting a minority of people dictate what their choices can be.

if people really want to help the situation, start with education, a better social support mechanism, smoother and easier adoption policies to name a few.

and everyone who calls themselves pro life, should also be foster parents and on adoption lists, so they can also help the children who have already been born and are facing equally life threatening situations.

My parents adopted two of my siblings. My brother Chris, and my sister Laura, are both from Korea. I definately think people should consider fostering and adoption. I would, but I'm only seventeen.

Pro-life is such an imbecillic (I think I just made a word) expression. Aren't we all pro-life? Other than the small number of homocidal maniacs in the world, EVERYONE is pro-life. I'm definately pro-life. RU-486....why wouldn't you be in favor of it?

Pro life zealots hate RU 486 because it now negates their 2 favorite tactics-harrassment and intimidation. You can abort an unwanted fetus in the privacy of your own home, and nobody but you and your doctor ever need know. Sounds like progress to me.

your parents are helping out in ways that many other people would only admire but never consider.

one of the biggest hurdles that pregnant parents face is the social stigma that is placed on them when they consider putting their child up for adoption. They are labled as too stupid poor, or failures as parents, and that's why they are admitting defeat and want someone else to raise their children. It's one of the hardest decisions a parent can make, to willing give up their child so that the child might have a better life, and society repays them with insults.

sorry, but too many of the people who are pro life, don't want to also put their money where their mouth is, and instead they take the easy road and blame the parents.

<< I hope that the new administration will do something about this. >>

That's precisely why it was approved so fast. I am in favor of personal freedom. And if you think that GWB will spend what little political capital he has after this election to take a stand on this issue, you are very mistaken. He might be dumb, but he is not crazy.

<< Pro life zealots hate RU 486 because it now negates their 2 favorite tactics-harrassment and intimidation. >>

<sarcasm> Yes, the ONLY reason we hate it is cause we won't know where to protest. Surely, that is our main concern. <sarcasm>

I think some of you are missing the point of the post: Regardless of whether you're pro-life or pro-choice, the pill RU-486 is potentially harmful to the women who take it, and was approved by the FDA in an inappropriate manner. That is the topic at hand.

You'll find that 90% of the responses to questions like these are by people who never read beyond the title of the thread.

Obviously the people who are pro-choice in this thread are supporting the choice of the drug companies to put potentially harmful chemicals on the market. Oh well, tobacco lawsuits all over again.

The drug has been used safely in Europe since 1988. Calling it dangerous to women is a lie designed only to divert attention from the real issue-easy access to abortions.

There is no way to change minds on this issue. I am in favor of this as an option whether I agree with abortion or not. I dont think I should force my views on anyone, I believe you give someone information and let them decide on their own.

It's quite possible that this is a last ditch attack by the pro-life side. But if this statement is true

<< The FDA took 6 months to review this drug, one of the fastest approvals ever. >>

Then doesn't it at least deserve some scrutiny? Why the rush through the approval process? Perhaps this was as much a political move as the attack on the drug is. Seems possible that liberals would want to push the drug through the system before Bush takes office, and damn the consequences of a hasty decision.

bobber, is it really a hasty desicion? does the use of this pill my other contries for years not support the FDA's approval at all?

It isn't like this is some drug that has only been used in clinical trials. Once you realize that it's been around for 20 years, there's much less to scrutinize than there would be with a brand new drug.

If everyone else jumped off a bridge, would you do it to? 🙂

Some European countries legalized marijuana long ago. Why aren't we following their lead in that area?
