Abortion could possibly go under a Bush 2nd term

WASHINGTON - Thirty states are poised to make abortion illegal within a year if the Supreme Court reversed its 1973 ruling establishing a woman's legal right to an abortion, an advocacy group said Tuesday.

Currently, it is believed that five of the nine justices support abortion rights, but that balance could be tipped if President Bush (news - web sites), in a second term, nominates a new justice who reflects his anti-abortion views. Democratic contender John Kerry (news - web sites) is a strong supporter of abortion rights.

Meh, I don't know how I feel about this. Abortion is one of few issues I don't agree with Bush.

What's wrong with a state making abortion illegal if that's what the residents want?

All the Supreme Court could do is overturn Roe vs. Wade, which says nothing about abortion. AFAIK, it just doesn't allow the law to go inside an operating room.

Even if Roe v. Wade is overturned, it would just be a matter for states to decide ... that's the way it should have been all along.

unless congress passes a law, abortions will not be illegal, even if Roe v. Wade is overturned. It just makes it a matter for states to decide. CA, NY, MA, etc. will keep it legal. If it's not legal in your state, go to another one.

Abortion is ugly. Abortion is used as a substitute for bad planning, in my opinion. But my opinion does not count, because I am not a woman. Abortion is also used by the likes of Karl Rove to polarize voters and make them think a vote doe an anti-abortion candidate is a vote for Godliness. If it weren't for abortion, the Christian Right would cease to exist as a political faction, and we could choose candidates on the basis of issues that are, in my opinion, more important.

OK, I'll stop mincing words: Abortion is evil, especialy when used as a tool to manipulate the will of the masses.

That's a false statement - a lot of 'Well to do' parents are paying the tab for thier
irresponsible 'Society Daugthers' to have them when they are 'visiting their Aunt'.

They preach ABSTINANCE.
Refuse to fund Sex Education or Contraception (which would go a long way towards prevention)
Cut the health care to needy mothers and the unfortunate children.
. . . .
then look away when it's too close to home.

People only get 5 years of welfare max nowadays. THis isn't 1980 when people could still stay on it indefinitely. No one is having kid after kid to stay on welfare because that option is not there anymore.
