Captchas in general are not bad, if implemented well.

The worse ones are those google ones where you have to pick the images because they are so SLOW. A captcha should not take more than a few seconds to solve and be more streamlined into the application.

Those ones are so annoying when they randomly decide to make you have to do like 5-10 rounds of it, and the images fade in super slowly. I've had it where I was stuck in an infinite loop and had to just give up.

I don't think there is a way around captcha which fade in slowly because there are anti-captcha companies who actually pay people in poor countries to solve these, but I agree that have to go through multiple rounds is BS.
