Abnormally High 6600GT Temps

Hi,

I recently bought my Galaxy 6600GT and the temperatures are extremely high. I idle at around 90 degrees and it says ambient is usually around 38. This is after I removed the old thermal paste and put AS5 on the gpu.

Here's a picture:

And here are motherboard temps:

Can anybody help me with this? Are these temperatures normal for the Galazy 6600GT (AGP Version), or did I do something wrong while applying the thermal paste?

Any help would be appreciated.

It's pretty toasty.

Update : I tried running a game for the first time on this computer (Need for speed Underground 2) and in the intro screen it froze and random pixels went all over the screen, at which point my computer rebooted itself. I'm using the latest nvidia drivers on a MSI K8N Neo-FSR Platinum.

What were the temps like before you put on the AS?? What was your thoughts behind doing that? If it was running cooler with the stock compound, chances are you buggered it up with the AS. I did a quick search and don't see any AC coolers for the 6600GT cards... If you had a 6800 series, then there's a few to select from...

As for software 'sucking' for temps on cards, I use the control panel to check out my 6800GT (AC cooler on it) and I normally see 40-45C on idle for the GPU. Not bad considering how silent the thing is...

Well, I'm not one of those total newbies that just 'cake on' the AS5 and thing it will run cooler. I sanded down my heatsink and made it smooth again, and reapplied the AS5. Before i did this i noticed that 2 of the ram modules were not coming in contact with the Heatsink, so I modded it a little and got it fitting nicely. Temps down to 40. Thanks everyone.

What's up with that, anyway? I've been waiting for an AC cooler for my 6600GT, and while I see a ton of recent rev. on their website, none for an AGP 6600. I don't OC the card, but I want to get the stock fan off of it so I can reduce noise.

The new Zalman VF700 offers better cooling at similar/lower noise and shold work fine with the 6600GT.
