Abnormal YoYo Result

Today someone (Truth?) found a factor for Mersenne + 2. The factor is 2. The Mersenne numbers all alway odd and therefor cannot have any even factors. After adding 2 to an odd number the result is also odd.

Now everything they do is of questionable value for science. I have detached all my rigs from the project and will never waste my crunching resources on this project again.

I leave it to the rest of you to make your own decisions about this.

Edit: I also detached from RNA World because it will also be suspect (and I was considering donating to the project because I like the concept very much.)

RT, which project on yoyo gave the false result? I couldn't find an announcement.

Look in the results for Mersenne + 2 under ECM. (not there! see below!)

They haven't announced anything. I saw it on the results page. It makes no sense.

If the app finds an even factor when it should be finding odd factors, it means that all prior WUs will need to be reprocessed when they fix the app. Which means that all the prior M+2 work was worthless. And it makes the other a little bit suspect. And new apps like RNA World would really be iffy in my mind.

I was going to put a link to the bad result, but they have removed the result! I couldn't find any announcement either.

I was not able to post on their forum when I first noticed this, and I just checked, and nobody else has mentioned it.

They also removed the "factor found" check mark from the M+2 progress page.

Before I would consider running ECM again I would need an explanation of the mistake.

This is frustrating because just yesterday I reached the 1 Million credit badge and was quite proud of the accomplishment. Now I'm thinking that the work I did was worthless.

I prefer to crunch stuff that will help advance the science in some small manner. Crunching with a bad app doesn't cut it.

Maybe someone could ask them for an explanation, since I can't get logged in to their forum.

What happened with this? It sounds like a serious error that they just swept under the rug.

I have not heard anything more about this error. I have started crunching RNAWorld. I thought I would give it the benefit of the doubt.

I am thinking that because Yoyo is a wrapper around an app from other projects, that the error might be at that project's site.
