able to connect to Internet via modem, but not router

XBOX and HTPC connect to the Internet without any issues when plugged directly into my modem. However when I plug either into a router that is then plugged into the modem, both devices don't connect to the Internet.

I tried a MAC clone in the router settings for the HTPC without any success, and followed the steps suggested in VirtualLarry's post in this thread:

I noticed that the modem assigns the same IP (192.168.1.100) to the HTPC and the router when one or the other is connected. Could this be the issue? Also, when the router is connected to the modem, and I do a router DHCP release/renew, the router tells me the Internet IP address is 192.168.1.66.

I have tried all sorts of manual settings within the TCP/IP properties but made zero progess. Anyone have ideas as to what I can do to get the Internet working via the router? Thanks in advance!
 
Whether you have Internet or not, first the computer/Game Box need to connect to the Router.

Auto configuration IP Address. . . : 169.254.8.160

This IP means that it is Not really connecting to the Router.

In addtion if the Modem assigns an IP of 192.168.1.100, it means that it is actually a Modem/Router.

So get yourself Educated about your Hardware, or post the precise name and models of your devices.
 
you probably need to have the router setup to serve dhcp, which is why you got a 169 address. The computer asked for an ip and got no response, but it is physically connected. And depending on the modem(I know my cable modems have this issue) you may have to reset the modem when you plug a router or switch into it.

And Jack I know of a few "modems" that have a 2 or 3 port router added in. which is really a router without a physical port and a switch all in the same box but I guess it depends on how technical you want to be. but yes names and model numbers would be helpful 🙂

I can connect to the router via the HTPC when cloning isn't enabled, however I can't when it is.
 
JackMDS - while I appreciate your swift replies, the slightly condescending attitude within them is interesting considering your status as a moderator. Why I am using a second router really isn't the issue, however I'll explain:

My main rig is in a room on the main level with the modem, and the HTPC and XBOX are in the basement. Instead of running two separate ethernet cables for each device upstairs, I'd like to run a single cat5 cable between the router and modem, and hence connect the devices to the nearby router.

Anyway, I was able to get things figured out using the link you provided to ezlan.net, thanks for your help.

 
When trying to help over the Internet in a forum like this the only info that is available is what verbaly is typed.

In your case Quote: "able to connect to Internet via modem, but not router". Means that you do not know what you actually have, and need education.

The funny thing is that you might be a Big Mature Famous Professor of Education and I might be a High School student.

In real frontal live interaction this would affect the nature of the relation and you might considered it as student behaving bad toward the professor.
