Abit VA 6 and Pentium III problem, Plz help!

I just put together a new machine for my gf and it consists of Abit VA6, P III 600\100\512 slot 1, maxtor 20 GB ATA\100, 192 MB RAM (1 stick of 128 MB PC133 & 1 stick of 64 MB PC100), and Radeon PCI. It booted up without any problems but it only posted at 450 Mhz with 100 Mhz FSB. That was with the multiplier and FSB set at User Defaults (6*100)in the SoftBIOS menu. When I chose the speed from the preset speeds (6*100 as well), it still posted at 450 Mhz and it wouldn't go past that screen( I was getting a message that the CPU speed was set at incorrect level). When I tried bootin at 4.5*103~460Mhz I got a message saying "windows protection error" in the process of booting up. I would be grateful for any suggestions you may have. I also have a question somewhat related to the topic. What is locked in Pentium chips, multiplier or the FSB settings. Thanx for any help you guys might provide.

Intel locks the multiplier on all their chips.

My first guess is that the processor is really a 600mhz P3 512k running at 4.5 x 133fsb. Intel produced both a 100mhz and a 133mhz version of the 600mhz P3 512k.

EDIT: Also, what BIOS are you running?
