ABIT DEFINITELY wants to pass on the message that it is very serious about overclocking. It's following a direction Asus took just a few weeks ago.

Abit will unlock its Pentium 4 boards for three products using new Intel chipsets. You will get this option on the AG8, AA8-DuraMAX, AA8XE, and the Fatal1ty AA8XE.

This ability will allow you to overclock your FSB from the default 800MHz to 1066MHz. Intel won't like this a lot, as it only wants to offer this FSB with its own 925XE motherboard.

You will be able to download new BIOSes from the Abit site soon enough.

Updated news from ABIT

CPU Accelerator basically enables users to change the multiplier factor of their CPUs. By altering the CPU multiplier, users can more easily find the optimal operating speed of their systems for massive performance gains. CPU Accelerator allows users to run their 800MHz FSB CPUs at a 1066MHz Front Side Bus. With the additional bandwidth provided by the increased system bus, PC?s equipped with CPU Accelerator deliver next-generation performance with the technology of today. In fact, CPU Accelerator can increase system performance by a whopping 33%!

I just bought this board a week ago for $107 (AA8-Duramax that is..) from that $50 MIR from newegg...
Now this shows up... I'm on a roll!

its not exactly unlocked ~ but you will get a choice of 2 different mplyers.

from what i understand, they are hacking the speedstep function.

Bingo. Asus has had a BIOS that will do this for several weeks now.

Holy over-dramatic thread title, Batman! ;)

So what's this mean EXACTLY? I buy a 2.8 775 and I can change multi to 13, 14(default), or 15 but nothing else? Still not bad. Also this will bypass 10% FSB limitations?

Too bad most of us can't afford them ASUS boards.

Abit AA8 has been known to bypass the 10% mark since its second bios revision. I hope that the latest one will allow it go achieve greater stability at +250fsb speeds. They need more PCIe multipliers!! or a LOCK!

I was under the impression from reading several different articles that there isn't much difference between a 800 mhz FSB or a 1066 mhz FSB in terms of performance and both still are much slower than AMD's offerings.

800fsb vs 1066fsb on the same processor?

for example: 2.8c at 800fsb=2.8ghz vs 2.8c @ 1066fsb=3.731 ghz

and there's isnt much difference in performance?

or were you referring to a processor with a default 1066 fsb vs another with a default 800 fsb?

I'd assume that what abit unlocked drops the multi while it raises the fsb Jojo, so it would be a 2.8@ 800 vs a 2.8 @ 1066. I haven't seen the benches but I hear that the performance is Meh.

I won't be dropping the multi, I'll be pushing for +4.25ghz. I just need a bios that won't freeze past 250fsb.

over 4.25Ghz !!!

either (1) you are dreaming or (2) you will be using some pretty eXtreme cooling and over volting

edit: great, i found your "rig page" (finally).

You say "in the process" and "watercooled" . . . . how far along are you?

AFAIK you will be able to choose between default multiplier and 14. That means no changes for the 2.8E. The 3.0E can go 14/15, the 3.2E can go 14/16, etc. The reason for this is because 14 is the "failsafe" multiplier. People were noticing this a while back when they started buying Prescott CPUs for their motherboards that were "Prescott Ready" but which really still needed a BIOS update. Their Prescott chips were all running at a default 2.8GHz, regardless of whether it was a 2.8E, 3.0E, 3.2E, etc. Once they updated their BIOS for one that officially recognized the Prescott chip, the chip would suddenly be running at full speed. Asus/Abit probably just did some poking around and found the code in the BIOS that controlled that one part and implemented it as an option.

The 10% FSB "limitation" seems to be a combination of voltage and some logic in the Northbridge that shut off operations when parameters exceed a preset value. Besides upping voltage, a bit of circuitry is needed to "fool" the Northbridge into thinking it is operating within parameters.

Of course I could be dreaming all this up...

I have pushed a 2.6C beyond 3.5ghz, an A64 3000+ to 2.6ghz (its running at 300fsb 2.5ghz now), and my next project will be this 3.4 to 4.25...

Honestly, I don't know if I'll make it, but let's hope for the best!

My watercooling system is custom: chevette heatercore, 1/2" system and whitewater alu topped block. I'm using a crappy L-30 pump, but that will be replaced soon.

EDIT:

Just updated first post, new link! Abit claims to have unlocked more than just the 14th multi..maybe all?

Good luck! . . . . please update us with your results,

i am looking for the FINAL stepping of Northwood to get as close to as possible - hopefully over - 4Ghz.

That'll give my Abit ic7g some more "life" next year over my curent 3.31Ghz .. . . . but i am only looking for an air-cooled solution. ;)
