I'm no video card expert, obviously- so which is a better card? Both cards have 128MB of ram.

Thanks

The Ti4200 will beat the fx5600 so I have to assume it's much better than a 5500.

;) Between GF4 and FX, the numbering doesn't relate to much extent, if you want "better" to mean "faster". An FX card had to reach the 5700"U" level, or 5800 "plain" to match the old TI 4xxx's in speed. But most of them added features that the typical Ti cards hadn't had before. If you actually want a "qualitative" comparison, Abit has an edge in its reputation, and tends to hold up more value for resale when it's older, slightly better than Chaintech. But when you get into the subjective area of "better and best" for products such as video cards (and so very many other items that newbies come into forums wanting to use the word "best" about), then there never is any one single answer. There are as many answers as there are people with opinions.

Incidentally, in quite a few tests, the 128 MB 4200's actually performed more slowly than the ones that had only 64 MB's. There was an explanation that seemed to make sense as to why this was so, but I didn't manage to mentally hold onto that part of the discussion, sorry!

What I found weird about the FX5500 is that it performs exactly the same as the old 128bit FX5200. Probably explains why all of the recent FX5200's have 64bit memory to slow them down abit.

Out of the two video cards you mentioned the GF4 Ti4200 is the one to get! :)

You're ahead of me on details, but my memory has started to have more leaks in it than a sieve, these days! Once you remembered that much, it did "sound familiar", at least.

I still have a working Ti 4200 in one PC that I use fairly often (heck, I still have a Ti 500 in a still older one that I use even more often that that one with the 4200!)

Just be careful in owning a 4200 as the latest games are starting to eliminate them from their supported line-up (i.e. BF2).

Saying 4200 kills FX5500 is like saying Geforce 2 ti 200 kills ATI Rage 128 Pro. Just cuz it "killed" the card in DX7 and DX8 games, doesnt mean either card is capable of playing anything new at settings above 800x600 HIGH smoothly. Certainly not beyond that in Doom 3 or HL2 or Far Cry I bet, without AA/AF.
