Why buy a slot1 when everything is gonna be socket 370 from now on? Buying the new mobo limits your upgrade path as you would need to use a sloket for future upgrades.

That's true, but for what I have now I would be happy. When a 1.5 ghz is within my buying range, I'll be able to get both cpu and MB.

But other than that, you like the board?

The SAR6 looks a lil better, and its a native socket370. The SH6 looks great if you have a SLot1 cpu and only want to upgrade a motherboard.

I have myself a P3 550E slot 1 running on an Asus P3B-F. Got the cpu running at 825mhz/1.7volts, but the AGP card gave me some missing textures at that speed. I looked at the Abit SH6 and it looks like the mobo i'll purchase to replace my P3B-F. As for the fact that all P3's are going Socket370, it's really easy to just use a slotket adapter in the future.

Intel P3 550E/733mhz 1.65volts
Asus P3B-F
Hercules 3D Prophet 2MX
128mb Micron pc133/Cas2
IBM 30gig 75GXP
etc...

Anyone know how far I can take this PIII? I am having holes put in my case for air flow. I will have 2 120mm fans blowing 100cfm a piece. One on the side and one at the top as a chimney. I also have 2 80mm fans, 1 on my HD's and one directly over the cpu and AGP slots. So with that cooling, how far should I go?

My RAM is PNY/Micron PC133/100, CAS3 I beleave. Any suggestions?

Thanks

You can subscribe with the subscribe button rather than just replying again... the button is the leftmost among the group of buttons.

I still would prefer a native socket motherboard thou.

the cooling only lets you maximize the clocking of your chip, doesn't increase what your chip can do, thats al up to how good your chip really is... but imagine with decent 133 ram and a multiplier of 8, you should have a good chance at 1ghz... fsb 125...

Supradude,

You PC is similar to mine. I'm only OC'ing my 550E to 733 mhz but seem to be getting some high temps, up to 54 degrees C. It was reading mostly in the mid-40s at 733 mhz before, but lately higher. I'm using stock retail fan and heatsink. I wonder if the temp is climbing cause my thermal compound is breaking down? Hmm... I'm not upping the speed for now but I'm curious to how you are set up for cooling.

BTW, I would suggest using a mobo set up with the coppermine FCPGA socket rather than slot one, if FCPGA CPU is what you will be using. That way you will be introducing one less target for trouble. When I first built my PC, the "no-name" coppermine rated converter was the cause of my repeated hard lockups. I replaced it with an MSI brand recommended by PCNUT and it's been smooth sailing since. Nevertheless, it's one less variable to worry about. My next mobo, assuming a new memory standard doesn't suplant the current SDRAM, will be a FCPGA socket mobo.
