Problems with the Abit SH6 motherboard.
No problems seem to relate directly to the Electronic components directly - though they may be the indirect reason for my problems. I have had many problems in trying to get this stable to any acceptable degree - I will list a few of the problems.
Components
V5 5500 agp card
SCSI card for dvd drive
Maxtor 7200rpm 40 gig hard drive
Eicon Diva ISDN card
SBlive pc128 card
P3 700 slot1 CPU
3com earthnet card
Win2k O/S
1) When I set the dip switchesto use CPU default frequency setting (default) it does not post at all. The CPU is fine and still works with my 2 other mobo's (bx and i820 chipsets)
2) If I set the SW1 so that it is for 100mhz then it will post but often means me having to turn on/off the power a couple of times.
3) the only way I can get it at all stable is to set the dip switches to 100mhz and use the default settings for my cpu in the bios. But is I change the slighest thing - e.g Auto/disable AC97 audio - or I disable the game port - the cas of my memory (I have cas 2 crucial memory) or even something minor like delay IDE inital from 5 to 4 seconds enabling or diabling PnP (no matter which way round) or a myriad of other minor things and then save to the CMOS. The computer will not post! To get round this I have to press the "Insert" button during boot up and the first of all I get a message saying the CPU is unworkable please change in the Soft Menu. I go into the soft menu and it is the same correct setting as before! What I have learnt to do is to then set it using the same setting as the default for the CPU but using "user Defined" I then save this and boot up again - of course it does not boot up (more about this problem later) but using the "insert" button once again I can then get back to the error message about "cpu being unworkable or changed" I then set it back to the default setting and save it and then go back the boot. At this point it sometimes works fine but often I have to power down and up again before the PC posts.
4) I cannot use the "user defined" settings in the "Soft Menu" at all - I have tried using the exact same setting as the default (includint FSB multiplier ratios and core voltage) but it refuses to boot up no matter what dips settings I use or diabling speed error hold. I bought this board so I could overclock in the future - all the cooling and higher mhz memory are in the PC but I have not tried with this motherboard as I cannot get it to even work on the correct settings under "user defined"
5) At no point have I been able to restart the PC via the O/S - it always refuses to post - the same applies to the reset button (70% of the time when still in boot up and 100% of the time when in the o/s). Sometimes restart works when used during install of drivers etc but once again this is sparodic.
6) All components on my machine are fine they worked before I put in this motherboard and have worked since I installed the old board back in. (Super Micro i820 (with the MTH bug) )
7) I have asked on BB's aboput the correct setting and have tried all advice from other owners to no avail.
8) The HW doctor will not install on my PC.
9) I have built 3 computers before and never had one problem with installation - they have all worked forst time. So I feel I have enough previous experience to elimate stupidity from the equation.
10) Please take this back I have already ordered another ASUS mobo from Dabs as this PC is for work and cannot go without a PC for more than a few hours!
11) If this mobo is not broken - which I find hard to believe - then it is very very flakey a best.
12) I have had other problems but these are the main ones.
