Hi. Putting a system together. I just noticed my Antec TP-II 550 PSU only has the 4pin atx power connector. Am I able to just get an adapter to fix this? I read some people say you can just stick the 4pin connector into the 8 pin as long as you do the right pin slots? A TP-II 550 is enough power for the 4pin connector in the 8 pin slot yes? Or am I going to need a new PSU? I didnt realize these newer C2D boards had an 8pin cpu connector instead of the 4. LINK

If I need a new PSU, I need to know so I can buy one today.

You can buy a 4-pin to 8-in adapter.
& it should run with only a 4-pin into the 8-pin socket although some people have reported improved stability with an 8-pin.

Hum I see. So an adapter is the better option. Or do you mean improved stability with an actually 8 pin connector off a power supply? Im not sure if any stores near me would carry the adapter. Id hate to buy one online and pay like $10+ after shipping.

The ATX12V 4-pin (2x2) lead, provided it is not constructed using sub-standard wire and terminals, can safely support up to around 9A of current (108W). If you have one of the 65W TDP processors, this is safely within limits.

If your model has a TDP exceeding ~100W, you should seriously consider implementing the other 4-pins, via adapter or new power supply. The adapter should not split the ATX12V lead, but should plug into a different power lead such as a Molex connector, PCI Express, or other unused power lead.
