Abit nf7-s problem will not post

a while back my computer mysteriously stopped working. I tried turning it on using the on off switch in front and it would not work. After screwing with the PSU i got it to power up. But no post. The small green light on the MB is on but i never get a beep or anything. All the fans work, but the hd light and the cdroms do not give me any lights at all. Also no display on screen. Could this be a psu problem? or am i looking at a bad MB or processor. I did overclock at one point but when this happened it was at stock speeds and voltages. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.
 
A full spec list will help us here 🙂 Include the brand & model of the power supply unit, the brand/model/speed of the memory, and the whole rest of the rig, including drives, cards, onboard coffeemakers, etc. 😀
 
Well the processor is a 2000+ athlon, the PSU is a coolmax 480 watt 3 fan psu, the ram is crucial 2700, run an albatron gforce 4 ti4800 8x agp, onboard nf7-s audio, and a network card thats really about it. Western Digital 80 gig 2mb buffer HD
 
There is a bug in the nforce2 chipset that sometimes will erase the BIOS if you are too aggressively overclocking, especially memory speeds/timing.

I've had the BIOS erased on my ASUS A7N8X-E a few times by some memory I have that WILL NOT run in Dual Channel mode on that board. Luckily I have two boards, and if that happens I just have to remove the BIOS and insert it into the other board (after it has booted with its good BIOS of course) then re-flash that BIOS.

If you remove the memory and CPU and boot and you don't get any beeping this is likely what you are experiencing. If it beeps when you remove the memory, look elsewhere, as your BIOS is functioning. In that case, I'd look at using the reset CMOS jumper and/or unplugging and removing the battery overnight.

It's pretty screwed up that I can erase the BIOS on my motherboard by putting this specific memory in my board in Dual Channel mode and running memtest86.
 
Well i reset the cmos and had no results. However after messing with the power cable unplugging it plugging it back in i discovered that sometimes it will turn the fans on by doing that other times it wont... I dont believe i had the the memory or the Processor OCed when the problem started occuring. A while back my mom told me she heard a high pitched beeping coming out of my machine said she had to turn it off. Shortly after that is when it stopped working. I suppose these two things have something to do with one another. I had allready planned on a new chip coming up soon but the motherboard ive got isnt that old, i got it back in like january or febuary so im pretty sure i can Rma if thats the problem, but how do i go about rmaing to new egg? i have no receipt will that be a problem or do i just need to pack it up and ship it back to them...if the MB is even the problem.
 
Yes, if the fans turn on sometimes and sometimes not, it sounds like a bad PSU.

Recently the computer I gave my girlfriend (old FCPGA Celeron, but works for her) would reboot at random,. Eventually it wouldn't turn on. We got it to turn on again for a while, but it stopped again. This time I got the fans to start spinning up and when they did, the powersupply let out a high pitched shriek, that slowly reduced in frequency, sounding like a capacitor vented. Sounds like a similar issue.
 
I really hope thats what it is. The PSU is the only piece of my system that is not grade A so hopefully thats it....either way i will be ordering my 2600 xp-m from excalibur on friday and also ordering a 200 gig sata HD then the following week ill be ordering the corsair xms 2-2-2-5 3200 ram....should make for a reasonably fast system🙂
 
May sound silly, but have you tried reseating all components? I had this happen once as well and it turned out that the video card was just slightly pulled out a bit. Honestly I would give that a shot first. Unplug everything and replug everything back in. You might even want to try just plugging in the following:
CPU
Memory
Video
Mouse and Keyboard
PSU

If that at least gets you past post, then start plugging in everything else.
 
Not sure if this would even do anything, but have you checked teh CMOS battery? Perhaps this has died for an unknown reason...? Also, does your computer function outta the case and on a cardboard box? Maybe the motherboard is shorting to teh case?

It was the power supply! Got my antec 550 true power and im up and running right now its sweet! soon to be ordering 2600 mobile and getting great speeds!
 
Glad to hear your problem was solved. I have read that the NF7 has a problem with one of the voltage supply rails (I think the 5V, not 100% sure). I had problems with my NF7-S with a 400watt supply. I upgraded to a 550watt and no more trouble. Just for kicks, try the psu on another motherboard.
