Abit KT7A won't boot

insane

Senior member
Hej guys,

I am having some problems with my Kt7A. This morging i descided to close the
whole case of my pc (i left one side open to cool beter my i don't wanna
have damp inside my pc). So i closed the whole case and pressed power button
i powered up it showed the Nvidia MX videocard info and then it stopped
loading i pressed power button again to shutdown the pc and again pressed
the power button all fans, harddisk and nic start to run but i don't get
notthing on my monitor. I treid tons of things like reseating the cpu and
put the battery out for 10mins. I am desparate and don't know what to do.
Help me out guys;-(

I had some similar problems. First I removed all Perfs. I had to disconnect the pwr cord from the PS, reinsert it and press the pwr button quickly. This allowed me to boot. I then set BIOS to all defaults and changed settings 1 by one. I don't know what was wrong but it is fine now.

Good Luck

Was the computer unpluged when you pulled the battery?
(You need to get the cpu voltage down...)

Does it "POST"?
Pull everything off of the motherboard --- now does it POST?
Put one item at a time back into the board starting with ram - video card

Put in win98 boot floppy... does it access the drive?
- If so try a different video card....
- If not your going to have to try a different processor???

Good Luck

Forkd,

First I removed all Perfs. You mean really everything including the videocard?. I only have the gf2 mx in (tested also with a v3 2000)

Tippmann,

Yes computer was unplugged when i took the battery
It doesn't post at all even with ONLY a videocard
en even took everything out and plugged it in part by part
Well i actually tested a other videocard but didn't tested with a other cpu.

I hope we can sort this problem otherwise should i send this mobo back to the dealer where i got it from?

Do you know what temp your processor was running at??

If it was over (50c) ---I would test with another processor

If the temp is/was lower than (50c)- - Then I would start looking for a mother board.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck 🙁

Well before one side of the case was open it was only 36C after i closed one side and booted it wouldn't post at all. I send a email to the RMA of my dealer. I personally think it's the motherboard the funny part of whole this story is i bought this motherboard because my kt7 raid is at RMA and i couldn't wait another 2 weeks. My KT7 RAID RMA was accepted by me dealer but declined by Abit so they returned it to my dealer my dealer got in to an discussion with Abit so Abit finally accepted(have to wait 2 to 3 weeks again making it a total of 8 to 9 weeks). This will be 2 Abit Motherboards to RMA. I will never buy an Abit motherbord again;(

Bye,

Insane (a disappointed abit user)

PS if you browse trough the web or check the NG's there are actually alot of people experiencing the problems i have

insane: I'm very sorry to hear about your troubles. Actually I have experienced almost the same thing. (I have a KT7-Raid + Tbird800@1GHz) Often when I have fiddeled around in the box, I have problems starting it up. Seems to be when I have unplugged the power, but I'm not sure. However, if I disconnect and reconnect the power, and try to start it many times, finally it starts. Mostly it starts after like two times, but one time I really thought something was dead. Luckily it started after many repeated attempts.

Try moving gently on the heatsink, memory and all cables, and try to start it a few times more. Don't give up just yet!

Good luck...

From many hardware forums over the web, it seems that a lot of ABit KT7A-RAID users have this booting problem as described by Speedo.

I think the KT7A-RAID mobo might be one of those mobos that likes to be coupled with a very high standard power-supply-unit(PSU).

Well, I do have the exact problems as Speedo and have juz got my hands on a new Enermax 350W PSU to test and see if it's really the PSU acting up and creating all these booting craps... 😀

Will get back with results.

Sounds exactly like my Asus A7v133 today, pull the plug, then reset the CMOS, then it posted again, thought something was really screwed.

Insane, have you unlocked your Duron? If you did, did you usea pencil? you may have to redo it.

Thanks guys for you input,

I will try your suggestons today. I did everything including removing the pencil marks on the duron (but i pencilled it again). I don't understand it you know AMD maybe good but i think if this was a Intel combo it would never have happend i am working on brothers p2 400 now and i am plain jelous of it how can a duron 1Ghz user be jelous of a 1Ghz duron with 80GB 19" monitor and so on. I had the same soundcard like my brother (mx300 no i own a terratec) my soundcard would lock after i play a mp3 (and had to reboot) he can just listend to mp3 my problem looks more like a AMD/VIA problem. Well i will let you know how things go

insane: hmm.. I had a hard time following you latest post... However, have you tried clearing cmos? If you are having other strange problems, make sure you are using the latest 4in1 drivers (and so on)

Hej Speedo,

When i set the jumper on dischared cmos the motherboard won't start AT all. I can't see anything on my monitor (pc doesn't post). How am i gonna install via 1-4 drivers?. Well i think the mobo is broke;(

You can't start your PC with the jumper set to clear CMOS. This is how you do it:

1. Turn off PC
2. Disconnect power cable
3. Move jumper to "Clear CMOS" for 20 secconds
4. Move jumper back
5. Connect power again, and fire her up.

Hopefully it starts now. If you get it running, go here to download the latest official VIA 4in1 drivers:

If all fails!!! i guess this would be another Abit RMA story. sorry to hear that your setup isnt working. 🙁

I am not sure if you have considerd this yet, but the new Abit KT7A bios that comes with the board will not let the PC boot up if there is not a working fan connected to the CPU1 fan header. There is a page in the box that tells you about this. Try to use a fan that operates over 2000RPM and connect it to the CPU1 fan header. I hope this helps you...

This is what was on the sheet of paper that came with my KT7A-RAID....

"The KT7A/KT7A-RAID motherboard FAN1 header must have the CPU fan connected onto it. Do not connect to FAN2. Once connected, first check that the connector is connected correctly. If you do not connect the CPU fan onto this FAN1 header or you connect incorrectly, the motherboard power will automatically shutdown. This design will protect your precessor from damage by heat.

Furthermore, the CPU fan specification requires a rotaion speed from 2000RPM to 5000RPM. Do not use a fan with a rotational speed below 2000 RPM, or your motherboard power will also automatically shutdown."

Don't worry about connecting a fan that spins over 5000RPM, because my Delta spins at like 7200 RPM and it works just fine. There is a new beta bios, WZ.b03, that allows you to disable this feature. Good luck!

I was having much the same problems (still am) with my KT7A. If you reset the CMOS jumper, it seems to work. The problem I am having if loading the OS. I can get almost all the way thru the 98 install, but then it screws up. I reboot and it keeps going, but then once I'm in Windows, it Blue screens me in Normal mode and I can only get in in Safe mode. The 98 OS was supposed to be a dummy OS so I could put Win2K on, but I can't get that far. The CDROM doesn't work in safe mode!

Speedo i did the exact steps you told me still no luck🙁
Damn it this sucks man. Well anyway thank you for your input and trying to help me out maybe i should move back to intel (i have never seen a posting about intel conserning this problem). Email is on the way to my dealer let's see what they have to tell

LickEmSmack, are you overclocking? If you are, set your cpu back to factory default speed then try installing windows.

insane,
I found this trying to help someone else:

Why won't my Duron boot on my KT7?

This applies to BIOS TL only.

AMD changed the specification of some Duron processors manufactured after week 31, so that they require a core voltage of 1.6v rather than 1.5v. If your processor is a week 31 Duron or later it will include the characters "AUT" and "0031" or higher in the serial number. ABIT modified the KT7 and KT7-RAID BIOS in version UL to reflect this change. However, if your motherboard shipped with BIOS TL and you have a week 31 Duron, your machine will fail to boot. To resolve this problem you need to upgrade to BIOS UL, but this is difficult if
you can't get the machine to boot! You have three options:

1.Borrow another Socket A processor from a friend or shop, boot with this, flash to BIOS UL or later, and then reinsert your week 31 Duron
2.Take the motherboard or BIOS chip to your supplier, together with the latest BIOS and flash utilities on a floppy disk, and get the shop to flash the BIOS for you.
3.Use an HB, B or 2B pencil to close the 3rd L7 bridge (this is the 3rd bridge out of 5 counting from the end nearest to the L7 title and excluding the dot) on the top of the CPU. This sets thevoltage manually at 1.625v and allows the machine to boot. You can then flash to the later BIOS. (The graphite in the pencil is sufficient to make an electrical connection across the bridge). See Overclocking the Duron/Thunderbird or Now Here's The Beef - The Voltage And Multiplier Settings at Tom's Hardware for a detailed description of how these L7 bridges work so that you know what you are doing! This may void your warranty (if anyone notices). Please check which L7 bridges your CPU already has closed and then consult one of the articles above to confirm the bridge you need to close.

Let me know.

My duron is week 33 i don't understand why it started in the first place and now. My motherboard has defintly a newer version then UL. So i don't think it's a voltage issue;(
It's really strange

Well, it wasn't too overclocked... about 50 MHZ... Looking at the bootlog.txt, it says it has a problem with the video driver. I'm using a GeForce 2 MX. I really didn't this would be a problem, but I'll try to reinstall with a diff video card.

sounds like a power supply problem or memory. remove everything not needed to lighten the load on the PS, and try using one memory stick.
cards not seated right would make it beep so thats not it
