I've been experiencing some trouble with my Maxtor 30 gig ATA 100... it's connected to my RAID controller (not in an ARRAY though) along with my IBM Deskstar 15 gig. The IBM has the OS and is therefore the boot device while the Maxtor just stores stuff. The Maxtor has no problem writing data, but reading data crashes the machine, not always (it's pretty irregular).
I also have 2 CD Rom drives, one drive, one burner... both attached the onboard IDE controller. I'm thinking the Maxtor might have compatibility issues with the Highpoint controller (though highpoints site says it should work). So i moved the Maxtor over to the onboard controller and moved the non-burning cd rom to the HPT controller. I then lost my "boot" option for the IBM drive. I checked both BIOS for settings to correct this but i couldn't find any. So I moved both drives over to the onboard IDE and both CD roms to the HPT. During the boot up process, windows kicked out a stop error and said "inaccessible boot device". I moved everything back to the way it was and all is back to normal, but the Maxtor still locks up sometimes.
Is there something i have to do in windows before i change the drives to different controllers (i.e. - sysprep or something?). Is there a way in either BIOS to have one hard drive on each controller but boot from the drive on the HPT? Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.
NOTE: I have tested the maxtor with several diagnostics and even low leveled it... All the diagnostics claim the drive to be in working condition.
