Abit KT7A-RAID: odd RAID behavior?

I?ve been using my Abit KT7A-RAID board for a while now without any problems. I used to have a 60 GB IBM hard drive attached to the Highpoint controller (one drive ? no RAID). I have just purchased 2 Seagate Barracudas ATA IV 80 GB discs and set them up as RAID 0 on the Highpoint controller. I reinstalled the OS (Windows 98 SE) and the latest drivers for all of my hardware, but have noticed some strange behavior that I have never seen before: I am no longer able to run either Scandisc or Defrag. Both programs give the same error: not enough memory; quit all other applications. The thing is ? I have 512MB. And I have never seen that kind of an error before I started using RAID. In case this is of any help ? I?m suing Highpoint BIOS version 1.0.3b1. What am I doing wrong? (er... other than use Windows 98 ;-) Is there any way for me to be able to run Scandisc and Defrag again? Or is this normal given my configuration? BTW: I downloaded an eval version of Power Disk 2000 Personal edition and it is able to defrag my disks. But I don?t want to be paying money for a utility of this kind!

Thanks,
Michael

Make sure you dont have norton or other security software running in the background. I got tired of disabling my antivirus to defrag, so i installed norton utilities to optimize disc performance. run speeddisc from norton utilities. my hdd performance picked up from 12500 to 16500. nothing compared to my old raid setup which scored 42000 on sandra.

Nothing else is running... I kill everything with CTR+ALT+DEL before I start defrag... And the bizare thing is - this has only started after I set up a RAID. Never had a prblem before...

That is odd- my raid 0 defragged fine with the windows defrag tool. Like I said I got tired of killing my Norton (I've got cable internet) when running the windows utility, so I switched to using Norton Utilities. BTW how did you set up 2 80gb hdd's- I thought you could only create a raid with up to 64GB array in windows. I used 2 30 gb (60gb array) barracudas for mine for that reason. Maybe that is where your issue lies??

Size limitation could very well be my problem! I wasn't aware of a limit for a RAID under windows... Thanks for the heads up!
I'd install XP, except I have some hardware for which there are still no drivers (SB Audigy, IBM PC Camera Pro)

Thanks again,
Michael
