abit kt7 thermistor question

Just installed my duron 600 in a abit kt7 and am currently in the pc health section of the bios. When i installed the cpu, i think i might have bent the cpu thermistor down a little bit too much. Should it be touching the bottom of the cpu? I know mine is not, how big of a difference does it make in temp reading? Currently the bios says duron 600 is at 37C with system temp at 28C.

Yes, it should be touching the bottom of the CPU. I installed my processor a few times to try and get it right - the first time, it was too high, and the processor wasn't flush with the socket. After another slight bend, I reinstalled it, and I'm assuming that it's just barely touching. The hard thing is that it's so hard the bend, the processor won't bend the thermistor when you insert it in the socket.

But having said that...

It says my 950 Thunderbird is running at 31C. I'm using a Vantec with a 60mm fan - now I don't know if this is the correct temperature - it seems pretty low.

The thermistor should be in intimate contact with the bottom of the CPU. I bent mine over so that the thermistor protruded about 0.10" above the CPU socket and then used the CPU to push it down as I installed it. The spring force of the thermistor leads should guarantee contact between the CPU and the thermistor.

Avian- 31C does sound very low for a 950 with your HSF. I would remove the CPU and try my method if you want to have an accurate measurement of CPU temp. Good luck!

If I do that, I suppose I'll have to remount my HSF - will I have to wipe of all the thermal paste from the CPU when I do this? And then put more gunk on?
