Yes, you can use it as a ata100 drive and dont have to create a raid. I believe you have to install the drivers so its active and enabled in your bios. I believe where you set up your boot sequence in your bios, where it is normally floppy,ide-0,cd-rom, you change the ide-0 to ATA/100. This may not be necessary to change, but I did on my kt7a-raid board after I installed my o.s.
