ABIT KT7 Raid 0 set-up problems

I have just bought an ABIT KT7 RAID motherboard which is equipped with the
HPT370 controller. I have been attempting to set this up with 4 Maxtor
ATA100 40Gb hard disks in a RAID 0 configuration. Highpoint reports that
this Maxtor disk - 54098H8 - passes their hardware compatibility tests. My
OS is Windows 98.

This has not worked as the set-up appears to be hopelessly unstable despite
using the latest HPT370 drivers, the latest ABIT BIOS, the latest VIA Chip
set updates etc. In the Highpoint FAQ's they say that "The HPT370 supports
Hard Drives over 40GB in size, up to 137GB". Does this mean that the HPT370
controller supports individual hard disks of up to 137Gb or that the RAID
set-up (in my case, of 4 hard disks) is limited to a maximum of 137Gb? The
size of the RAID 0 array that I am attempting to set up is of course 4 x 40
= 160Gb. Is there a limit to the size of the array that can be set up on the
Abit KT7 RAID?

In addition to instability I have notice that if I attempt to upgrade from
Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE, MS Scandisk fails to run (during the upgrade a
scandisk is routinely undertaken) and it reports that there is not enough
base (640Kb) memory. To work around this I have tried to run the Windows 98
SE setup with the /is switch, i.e. it installs without doing a scandisk, but
during the driver base intialisation I get BSOD after BSOD.

Any assistance will be enormously appreciated as this experiencing is
shortening my life span!!
