Abit KT7 - Need Help unable to install stable OS

Hi,

I have tried installing Windows ME numerous times but I have yet to build a stable pc. When I install the drivers/software on my 2 year-old computer, I receive the BSOD (blue screen of death) during the build:
Abit KT7 motherboard;
256 or more meg ram (various brands Micron & generic)
40 gig WD hard drive;
AMD Duron 600 cpu;
ATI Rage Pro video card, agp;
Diamond Monster sound card; and
Linksys Network Everywhere ethernet card.

The PC has never been overclocked.

I would appreciate anybodies insight or experience on this problem. Why am I rebuilding this pc. Its my son's pc at college. After two years of use he has numerous programs on it that can/do not uninstall, e.g. Napster etc. So instead of removing them I thought that starting afresh would be the best solution.

I have changed video cards, ram, and power supplies. I have moved the two pci cards into different slots, but the end result is an unstable system. I tried to follow the build procedure outlined at Paul's Unofficial Abit KT7 web site
http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kt7/kt7faq.htm)
His procedure is to install one item at a time: Windows OS, VIA drivers, DirectX, video drivers, etc.

Once after installing Windows ME I received the BSOD (blue screen of death) on the final boot. Another time I did not receive the BCOD tull after installing DirectX. However, after resetting the pc, everything appears fine. When I continue installing other programs/drivers, I continue to receive the BSOD . If I continue to install all the software, which takes several hours, & I received about 5 BSOD. I have even flashed the bios to the latest available, version A9, before installing Win ME. The BSOD appears so often that something is wrong, and I believe that the motherboard or the cpu may be the problem; all other items have been switched out.

I am installing the latest drivers from the web for the hardware: VIA 4in1 drivers, ATI drivers from their web site, etc. I doubt that these are the problem because the BSOD occurred once before I even tried to install them.

Before attempting this rebuild of the system I backed up the old system which appeared to run fine. So I can go back. Previously I was running Win 98SE. When I built the system two years ago, everything went fine during the build. I have attempted removing unwanted programs from the original system, but this now seems to render the PC unstable.

I have installed Windows ME successfully on my other system, Epox 8KTA3Pro, so I do not believe I am doing anything incorrectly.

Are you doing a complete format? Deleting the partition and re-formatting?

If yes, then try to install the OS with just the video card in it. No sound or network card. Then install these one at a time after the OS is up and running.

If you can, stick with win98, much more stable OS than WinME, in my opinion.

what jamautosound says, 100%
I dont remember if you said you tried different ram so try that first.

I dont mean to make you seem like a beginner, but often I find its the simplest things that cause probs so I am adding this stuff in.

I have found over the years that I should always start fresh, reset the bios with the jumpers on the mobo or even via the bios itself, set it to original specs. Make sure any on-board stuff is turned off except video if you arent adding a vid card.
Then use a boot disk or startup disk and make sure all is well to that point.
Then fdisk and format the hard drive.
Then add the os, then go to bios and do what needs doing, then add cards as desired.

I also agree that you shouldnt install winme, from what I hear it is the worst os that windows ever made. If you want the system restore feature then get xp or use win98se and goback, goback is better than system restore in winme anyway.

If you have done all this stuff then I suggest doing it all once more. If you still have trouble I suspect a bios/mobo problem or a mobo problem, or a ram problem.

Hi,

I attempted to rebuild the system from scratch (a minimal system: mb, cpu, memory, & video card). I have tried different power supplies and memory.

When I add to the minimal system, I have added these drivers/hardware in this order: VIA drivers, linksys card, directx, video card drivers, sound card, and applications. I can not install the video card unless I have directx. In order to get directx I download it from MS updates. Consequently, I have to install the nic early in the process. Note, when I install the nic, the system was stable. I have tried at least a half a dozen times to install Win ME & each time the BSOD occurred during the process. Once the first BSOD occurred, they would occur more frequently. I once received the BSOD at the final reboot for Win ME. In my last rebuild I received the BSOD after installing directx.

Since I have a complete backup of the system (Norton Ghost), I reinstalled the old system. I personally believe its the motherboard, but I have not tried a different processor. These two items are the only things constant across the rebuilds.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Greg
