Abit KT7, Chrome Orb, 800mhz Tbird - 88 C?!?! System Crashes

I don't know whats wrong... The system idles at 120F/49C but when a game is played (CounterStrike) the system kicks up to 190F/88C. This measurement is taken with Via Hardware Monitor. The thermometer HAS to be broken. One thing that may have lead to this is I had to bend the thermo down a little bit before putting the CPU in the socket. It wouldn't drop down because the thermo was so high. I bent it at an angle so that it would fit in.

Even if it is broken, why is there such a huge difference between idling and after 100% cpu usage? In counterstrike, artifacts will start showing up and then a few minutes later the entire system crashes. It is a new Chrome Orb cooling a Tbird 800@800. Its not an overclocked system at all. Could it be possible I used too much Thermal compound? Its the white silicon based stuff. I also know that the Chrome Orb cracked a corner of the Tbird core, but the system runs stable if not doing CPU intensive stuff.

Or is it the video card? Because of the artifacts showing up that may be a possibility. The video card is a 3d Prophet SDR with stock cooling. Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you bent it down the temp would be lower, not higher. I have a KT7 with T-Bird 750 overclocked to 900Mhz. It runs 32c low to 54c full load. With an Alpha and 80mm 40 CFM case fan ducted to the outside of the case. I too didn't like the high temps. My room temp is about 80-82F normally.

You might wanna ensure the Corb is actually making contact with the T-Bird slug. Might wanna take the mobo out with the Corb attached and hold it up to the light to make sure NO light shows thru where it makes contact with the cpu slug. I had this problem w/my FC-PGA and took me a week to figure out :) Might wanna try the new Arctic Silver paste, as it conducts heat way better than plain white silicon. Whew..... 190 is wayyyyyy up there. Might wanna fix that before doing anything else or you may have a very short lifespan on that T-Bird

Ok, I just ran SETI for 24 hours and its been stable, with Via Hardware Monitor showing 190F cpu and no crashes. So I'm pretty sure its the 3dProphet SDR overheating the system. I find that somewhat ridiculous...

190F!!!:Q:Q:Q That is entirely too hot for any processor at full load!!! 87C is way too hot (90C is max ratings for that processor)...My 1GHz Tbird runs at 44-48C at full depending on room temperature with the Alpha PAL6035 and Sunon 23CFM fan (I couldn't take the Delta's noise although it kept it in the 39-42C range at full load!)...I would check the contact between the heatsink and the CPU for even, flat contact before you burn your chip up!

Good Luck!

Do you really think thats a correct reading though? My other Tbird800/KT7/Golden Orb idles at 35C...

better check that temp if it right your playing with fire. do you have any case cooling, get better cpu fan, something big!

I would add couple of case coolers like 80mm Sunon fans ,plus try the Taisol Heatsink/fan ,I`m using one right now & my average CPU temperature is 43c(on a Thunderbird 900mhz)btw it stays under 50c even under full load.Your problem sounds like overheating get it sorted soon or you may have a dead CPU.

:)

how did you get the chrome orb on the kt7 in the first place??

i have a chrome orb and it bumps into the resistors, so i ditched it for a pal6035, a good choice might i add...

Those would be capacitors.... I bent them down a little bit and managed to scratch their surface off, but thats only protective plastic coating, so its OK with electrical tape. :)

I found the problem - the Chrome Orb had two pieces of plastic that required peeling off the bottom of the Orb. I had only peeled off one layer and thought that the stuff showing was the thermo-pad. I had even used extra thermogrease. I took off the Orb and found that all the thermogrease had burned off and there was still a piece of plastic that was mostly burned also. I was a bit angry. :)

Took off the plastic, added more thermo grease, and now the system is fine, idles at about 95F, full load at 107F. Very cool compared to the 190+ I was getting before.

The Geforce SDR overheats though, and freezes the system after playing any 3d game for an extended amount of time. Stupid card. Going to call Guillement tomorrow to see if they can do anything about it. Added another case fan, no effect.
