Hello: I have an abit KT7 running win95 B and my turtle beach Montego II Quadzilla just will not work on this Mainboard :(
I can get the card to play the welcome to windows sound, and maybe a few sound tests, but any game I start, the first sound played, my system locks up. Using the Aureal 3d demos I lock up in them also.
I have checked all irq's and memory address's and find no conflicts. I have no yellow ? marks in my control panel/device manager either. Currently I only have my Video card( Diamond banshee), and the sound card installed. I also tried the latest drivers for my card to no avail. In the Abit Bios I set irq 5 to legacy ,and dma 1 & 3 to legacy also to no avail.I tried setting a memory hole at 15-16 meg, I tried lowering cpu and I/O bus voltage to no avail. I read on ApusHardware that the abit has problems with aureal 3d during extremly heavy load, such as in 3d games. However I dont even get started in the game, and I cant believe the 3d sound demos cause high cpu load.( they better not be) I also occasionally lock up just entering win95 when the welcome wave file plays. When I lockup. I can see all icons and normal win95 display( or game display) but my sytem does not work, and sometimes it locks with harddrive light stuck on. I am forced to cold boot. Needless to say I have been using this soundcard for 4 months on my older Pentium 233 system ;(

I do have generic 100 MHZ ram 128 meg, and a 250 watt power supply. However if I remove the soundcard I can run without any lockups or problems. I installed my modem, and searched the web for 3 hrs and did not have any lockups, so I presume my memory and power supply are not the culprits.
I sure hate to sell this soundcard and buy a differant one, it is only 3 months old now :( besides I liked it alot on the old computer system.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would recommend you check out the KT7 discussion forum on apushardware.com, they have lots more info on KT7 stuff.

I believe the Montego 2 is based on the Vortex 2 chipset. If so, try downloading the 2048 drvs from www.vortexofsound.com as these could be of use.

After many many frustrating days, I've discovered that A3D chips are incompatible with VIA's K?133 chipset. I had a card based on Vortex 1. Unfortunately, they haven't released (and probably never will!) a fix for my dilemma...Oh well - saving for a SB Live! 5.1.

rempe,

out of curiosity, which Aureal card (1 or 2) do you have, and which ref. drvs are using?

Thanks to all. How can I be sure I have all the old sound card drivers removed from my system before installing the new referance driver 2048? Short of reformating I mean. I have read now that old sound drivers from aureal left on, during upgrades can also cause grief.
I hate to bite the bullet on a new sound card :( I went broke buying this new mom board and cpu, and the sound card is only 3 months old :(
grrrr. Of COURSE all the reviews at the time said the aureal turtle beach card was so excellent etc. Of course I never found any complaints against the Abit Kt7 until to late grrr.
