Abit KR7A-RAID or IWill XP333-R

Hey, folks.

I think I'm going to give up on a dual MP mobo and just go with a single cpu and go RAID with ATA/133 support. Been looking at these two and will probably want to add an ATI 8500DV for video capturing/editing.

What would be the better choice in mobo? And, should I forget the ATI 8500DV and get something else and add in a firewire card?

Overclocking is not too terribly important but I wouldn't mind having some options open in that arena.

And, what's a good performing, yet quiet, heatsink/fan combo?

Read my thread on the Iwill XP333 to see what you think about it. Don't know about the Abit, but at least I could tell you about the XP333. I would cross thread, but I don't think the mods would like that. 😀

Yeah...saw that thread and there's sort of one about the Abit (mostly about the RAID capability, I believe).

Just looking for stability and compatibility dealing with video editing/capturing. Have an ASUS A7V with ATI Radeon 32MB DDR right now with a separate Firewire card and using Ulead Media Studio Pro Director's Cut and it's ok. Still have some issues/lock-ups during rendering with some files and I've always had a gut feeling it's something to do with the ATI/VIA combo. Looking to go away from that. Just saw in another thread in the dist. computing forum that the XP 2000 is coming out very soon and want to build a new PC next month.

Just looking for tips on best board, fan, ps (probably will get Enermax) and case.

How good is that Unlead directers cut, I have the SE ver 4.0 right now.
Thinking about upgrading to the Directors cut.
Using it on my new KR7A Raid board with an XP 1900, and it rocks.

I'm running a Visiontek GF3 video card, D-Link 550TX Ethernet card, SB Audigy Platinum, 3 Hard drives 2-30 gig IBM and 1 15 gig IBM
TDK 12-10-32 soon to be Lite On 24-10-40 and a 56k CDRom wiith a PC Power Cool 450w Power supply.

If you are looking for stability, get the Abit KR7A-Raid. If you are looking for pure speed, but at the loss of some stability, get an IWILL XP333-R.

What kind of heatsink/fan combo you get really depends on if you are overclocking. For standard, non OC use, a Cooler Master DP5-6I31C-A1 will serve you well. They are around $10 at Newegg. Although not the quietest, it's a good noise/cooling compromise.

As for case, it also depends on how many drives, etc. you are going to use, but gor a standard midtower case the Enlight 7237 is pretty good.

As for the video capture card, the 8500DV is probably fine for most uses. If video editing is the primary feature of this system, consider getting a full fledged video editing card rather then a simple consumer one.

Loss of stability? Have you even used one? Geez...

Of course I have experience with both boards, otherwise giving advice pertaining to these boards would be folly.

Abit has a tradition of high quality, stable boards, and this is no exception.

Iwill has a history of high quality boards with quirks, and this is a repeat of the same.

As of now, I'm leaning toward the IWill (heck there's two active threads now on problems with the Abit board).

i think AZ's been talkin to some of his gamer friends........xp333...very stable......also very tweakable..........my experence with abit....2 boards down right after warrenty.....un....un..unstable......dont know about the board you want though.....the kr7a

Had you taken the time to read my systems, you would have noticed that it had been a couple months since I have updated the profile on the "my rigs" page. I didn't update because it just didn't occur to me that "My Rigs" was taken so seriously as a status symbol.

I build PCs to resell locally, so in addition to my experience with my personal system I have experience supporting other's systems. It is based on this, providing tech support and building systems, that I came upon my determination as to what is stable and what is not.

Also, if you noticed Conjur's questions, none of them were "What do you think of AZGamer?", so let's try to stay on topic.

If you have anything to add other then "This is good, he doesn't know what he's talking about!", please speak it to the world. If not, then you are simply thread crapping.

I would say that based on what you said you wanted in a system, neither the Abit or the Iwill would be a good choice.
The Abit KR7A is a pure enthusiast overclockers board, pure and simple. Overclockers want the best performance so the hardware is tuned to a high level, the result is the possibility of system instability. The Iwill XP333 uses the Ali chipset, which has not been used in large amounts of motherboards as of yet. Because of this there are bound to be issues that will come to light when more people use boards with this chipset. In short, if you feel like being an unpaid beta tester, use this board.
I would go for a motherboard with the AMD 760 chipset. These are very mature platforms and the performance is not much reduced from the latest stuff available, at least for what you want to do. Check the link below for a roundup of AMD760 boards.

Yes, but no AMD760 board has ATA/133 support. I think the Abit would be a perfect balance of stability and features for his uses, and I agree with the Ali beta testing statement.
