Abit KR7A Non-Raid

Okay, over at access micro they have the KR7A non raid board there for 139.00 (seen some one had posted it at amdmb). It is the non raid version, which I was kinda interested in because Ive seen that the highpoint raid controller isnt doing very well.

Now the big question, I figured I should use the Promise raid controller...but which one do I get? I see they have like 3 or 4 different ones? I wont be using ata-133 so that wont be a big issue. Any hot buys on these lil fellows anywhere?

Thanks in advance

Actually that didnt change my mind about anything. For one, im not too fond of Toms reviews. Secondly, the promise controller did outperform the other two in his review. Thirdly, Anandtech's review (although the pentium boards) showed that the two boards using the onboard RAID from promise did perform slightly better than the highpoint controller. Finally, there have been people around here and other boards reporting problems of slow performance when using the KT266a chipset and the highpoint controller (dont know if they found a fix yet?). Id rather skip all the potential problems and get a solution that is going to be fast and reliable.

However, Id like to thank you for pointing that article out to me as I now have a better understanding of the differences between the promise controllers.

One thought that is important regarding the testing of the highpoint controller is what benches are being used..from what I have seen Sandra does not support ATA133 properly..so this may effect the results...

Good thought there, that may be the reason for the poor scores. Im not even sure if Im going to do this raid thing right away. I do know that my dell shipped with a promise ata 66 card and it has worked flawlessly in the two years Ive owned it. Never had to put in a updated driver or anything (probably should have), but for the most part its been trouble free which I really like. That is another reason why im steering towards the promise card. Windows always seems to have good compatibility with them.

Oh well, thanks for the input everyone and since we are close enough...have a merry christmas!
